Since its launch, the independently owned Varsity Hotel & Spa (www.thevarsityhotel.co.uk) has been a popular destination for holiday makers and travellers wanting to experience Cambridge in luxury and style. The riverside location, rooftop terrace, outstanding restaurant, full-service spa and the modern décor combine to make this hotel amongst the most luxurious and well-appointed in Cambridge.
Ideally situated in the centre of Cambridge, guests are truly immersed in the culture and charm of local life from the moment they arrive; The Varsity hotel is the perfect base for punting, shopping, sight-seeing and nightlife.
The hotel's staff have welcomed an array of A-list celebrities including Colin Firth, Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes, as well as the families of Royal households, and are dedicated to ensuring that guests have a wonderful and memorable experience.
The hotel sits amidst the city's buzzing Quayside area and, backing onto the picturesque River Cam, it is located in one of the most attractive spots in Cambridge. The top two floors of the hotel are made entirely from glass allowing guests breath-taking views of the surrounding area from the comfort of their room, including St John's College spires, the lush green of Midsummer Common or the punts gliding down the Cam.
The most awe-inspiring feature of The Varsity is its spectacular roof terrace, complete with bar, which looks out over Cambridge and provides unparalleled views of the University's world famous architecture. Most University Colleges can be viewed from the roof garden and for those wishing to do a lazy tour, guests can lounge on the outdoor seating, relaxing, as the world passes by below. In the early evening, The Varsity rooftop becomes the most romantic spot in the city, watching the sun set whilst enjoying a champagne cocktail, or a gin and tonic.
The hotel's restaurant, The River Bar Steakhouse & Grill is located on the Quayside, with magnificent views of the river. Head Chef Angus Martin locally sources much of his menu's ingredients, and is committed to serving the most tender, full flavoured steak, only using the finest prime beef, aged for 28 days. Alongside their famous steak, guests can enjoy fresh fish, great vegetarian dishes, homemade puddings and a well-crafted cocktail list. For the ultimate al fresco culinary experience, the adventurous can even dine whilst taking a guided punt tour of the city.
The Varsity is positioned in the heart of Cambridge's community, regularly hosting unique and innovative events that can be enjoyed by both guests and locals. The River Bar's steak and wine master class is legendary in the city and provides a gastronomic crash course in this classic culinary pairing from the restaurant's expert suppliers. In summer 2012, the hotel hosted The Skyline Cinema, a pop up movie theatre, on its rooftop and in 2013, The Varsity has teamed up with the Cambridge Astronomical Association to hold astronomy master classes.
For an ultra-luxurious stay, the hotel has three fabulous Master Penthouse Suites all with separate lounge area; the larger suites benefit from spacious wooden-decked balcony areas with comfortable loungers. The suites' amenities rival some of the finest hotels' with Illy espresso machines, complimentary still and sparkling bottled water, Nintendo Wii with a selection of games, air conditioning, under-floor heating and monsoon showers in the bathrooms.
The Glassworks Spa is located in the adjoining building and provides a cutting-edge health club with state-of-the-art gym equipment and yoga, pilates, aerobics and spinning classes on site. All hotel guests will receive complimentary membership to The Glassworks during their stay.
The Spa is comprised of a beautiful Jacuzzi that overlooks the river, a sauna and steam room and eight private rooms offering treatments from facials and massage to Jessica nail treatments and Aveda hairdressing. The spa has devised bespoke indulgence days taking in everyone's needs from 'Rejuvenation' packages to 'Total Time Out for Men' and 'Prenatal Pampering' for expectant guests. For the ultimate in in-room luxury, the spa can bring treatments to the suites. Guests are advised booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
The design concept is modern British, juxtaposing the traditional with cutting-edge elements throughout the hotel's six floors. All interior design elements combine fabrics and wallpapers from Colefax and Fowler, Osborne and Little, Farrow and Ball and other established British names. Although each room is individual, guests can expect to see strong patterned wallpapers from Nineteenth Century English cotton print or botanical influences, solid oak flooring throughout each room, sandstone bathrooms with monsoon showers and some with free standing Victorian baths.
Bedrooms are available for check in from 3pm and check out is by 11.00am the following morning.
