The Real Springfield 07 May 2015
The Unofficial Simpsons Tour

Travel Oregon

Springfield, Ore. – December 17 marked the 25th anniversary of The Simpsons series debut. Woo hoo! To celebrate the milestone, Travel Lane County has launched "The Unofficial Simpsons Tour." The self-guided tour leads fans of The Simpsons to seven iconic places that will be familiar to those that watch the longest-running American sitcom. While many Springfields have claimed to be the inspiration behind the town, Springfield, Oregon, is the real one according to show creator and Oregon-native Matt Groening. He signed a plaque "To the REAL Springfield" and once mentioned it in an interview with the Smithsonian. To those who still dispute this, we say, don't have a cow, man. With the blessing of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, the Simpsons mural in downtown Springfield was completed in August 2014. The voice of Lisa Simpson, Yeardley Smith, helped dedicate the mural. Her handprints and footprints can be seen at the base of it.

The 15-by-30-foot painting covers the west wall of the Emerald Art Center and is just one of the stops on the tour. Others include the Springfield Horseman Statue, representing the town square memorial on the show that depicts Jebediah Springfield on a horse. Join the entire Simpsons family at Sweety's Self Serve Frozen Yogurt. Marge, Homer and the crew sit outside the shop on nice days. Inside you'll find Simpsons memorabilia from floor to ceiling. Simpsons fans from more than 45 countries have signed the Sweety's guest book. Ay caramba!

Grab a cold one at Max's Tavern, the real Moe's. They don't serve Duff Beer (D'oh!), but with a nearly identical exterior, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and even jars of pickled eggs are staples at this bar. This tavern, which opened its doors in 1932, is a must-stop for fans of the show.

You can even sit on the life-sized couch used for "The Simpsons Movie" premiere at the Springfield Museum. There's just enough room to sit beside the family for a photo opp.
