The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa's Executive Chef Christo Pretorius and Sommelier Gregory Mutambe have been chosen to participate in the prestigious “Chefs who Share - the ART of giving” gala event. This event will take place on Thursday, September 11th in the Cape Town City Hall. Created by Opulent Living and acknowledged as a highlight on the South African culinary calendar, the occasion will bring together seven acclaimed international Michelin star chefs with 14 of South Africa's top chefs and seven sommeliers . More than ZAR 1.1 million was raised in aid of youth development by this culinary extravaganza in 2013. 100% of the proceeds was donated to MAD CHARITYᵀᴹ and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, who are also the beneficiaries of this year's event.
Legendary international chef Alfred Miller, from Austria's Wirtshaus Schöneck in Innsbruck, will work alongside Chef Pretorius at the grand gala, as well as award-winning South African chef Marthinus Ferreira of DW Eleven – 13 in Johannesburg. Ferreira is also well-known as a judge on the SABC TV series “The Ultimate Braai Master.” Twelve Apostles' Sommelier Gregory Mutambe completes the team and is preparing an exclusive fine dining menu paired with top wines that will serve three of the 21 tables of guests attending the event.
Chef Pretorius and Sommelier Mutambe, together with Food and Beverage Manager Gavin Ferreira, have maintained The Twelve Apostles Azure Restaurant's Diamond Collection in the Diners Club Winelist Award for years and secured its spot in the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards in both 2013 and 2014. Gavin Ferreira will also assist at the “Chefs who Share” event, running the floor and coordinating the food and wine service.
Executive Chef Christo Pretorius (29) first joined The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa as Executive Sous Chef in November 2012 and was promoted to Executive Chef in September 2013. A graduate of the 1000 Hills Chefs School in Durban, his work experience includes positions held at the five-star Relais & Châteaux properties Kurland Hotel and Tsala Treetop Lodge, and the Cape Royale Hotel where he was Sous Chef at Bistro 1800°. He has competed in several high-profile cooking competitions, and won Unilever Food Solutions 2012 “Junior Chef of the Year.” In 2012, Pretorius placed second in the prestigious Sunday Times “Young Chef of the Year” competition. One of the rising stars of the Western Cape's vibrant culinary scene, he has made his mark with inventive new menus at the Twelve Apostle's Azure Restaurant. Earlier this year Pretorius won the coveted title of "Red Carnation Hotels Chef of the Year 2013/2014," and was named one of eight WWF-SASSI (South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) Trailblazers at the annual SASSI Seafood Circle Awards.
Sommelier Gregory Mutambe (29) is one of South Africa's most talented young wine connoisseurs. He serves as the Head Sommelier of The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa and is a respected member of the SAA Winelist selection panel for First & Business Class, as well as the Platter's Wine Guide .
