Those who live at The Residences at W Hollywood (aka RWH) are frequently tipped to artful finds in their own eclectic backyard by their residents-only concierge.
This week’s “five-minute finds” just steps (or a tiny bit more) from Hollywood & Vine – a curated collection of hot spots that are shared on a regular basis – feature a walking-weekend’s worth of art, photography exhibitions and architecture. Check out this selection of artful pursuits:
Musician Moby unveils three years of Hollywood photos at Project Gallery:
- This transplanted New Yorker captures images of his new neighborhood
- Innocents is his look at the slow apocalypse of civilization and the cult of innocents that arose in its wake, using inventive images of masks, disguises and other objects in and around Hollywood
- Through March 30 at Project Gallery, 1553 N. Cahuenga, Hollywood, an art gallery and event space with high octane espresso bar
Architecture as art at iconic Capitol Records Building, headquarters to Capitol Records since 1956:
- Any walk through the neighborhood includes striking glimpses of this Louis Naidorf design at 1750 N. Vine just north of Hollywood Blvd., whose circular design mimics a stack of 7-inch vinyl records on a turntable
- The world’s very first round building, it’s also known as the “house that Nat built,” due to the vast number of records that Nat King Cole sold for the company
- If you’re not a studio musician with an audition or a recording gig in progress, take a sneak peek inside this artful round building, thanks to a guided tour by Capitol Music Group of its recent renovations
Produce as art at Hollywood Farmers Market
- Billed as one of SoCal’s best markets, this lively spot features 160 farmers, producers and artisans who specialize in all seasonal products with lots of certified organic options and every global culinary influence
- Meet local families, top chefs, musicians (and spot celebs) who make the market a fun weekly community happening; recent Yelp posts praise the variety of mushrooms from a farmer whose “gorgeous” display “was art” as well jewel tone citrus, Givens Farm organics, vegan cashew cheese plus Spice Alley and prepared dishes from Dave’s Korean, the crepe vendor, Coconut Mini Cakes and Corn Maiden Tamales, among many others
- Also visit one of the many artisans who display their handmade arts and crafts
- Just visiting? Order a vintage-style giclee poster print of the market as a keepsake
- Sundays, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., rain or shine, corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Ivar Avenue in the heart of Hollywood
Above and below ground, celebrate “Hooray for Hollywood” at the Hollywood/Vine station for the Red Line Metro
- At the corner next to the W, this station showcases designs by artist Gilbert “Magu” Lujan in collaboration with architect Miralles Associates, Inc. to portray the history and glamour of Hollywood’s exciting past
- The street level of this station features symbols of the world’s fantasy film capita and the elevator entrance resembles a movie theater with its marquee greeting riders on the street
- Bus shelter designs reference Grauman's Chinese Theater, a stretch limousine and the Brown Derby Restaurant that once stood on this corner
- Transiting down to the subway platform, passengers follow paving which recalls the yellow brick road from the "Wizard of Oz" and pass by 240 hand painted art tiles on the station walls
- The interior handrail design houses the musical notes to the song “Hooray for Hollywood”
- Film reels decorate the ceiling and two original film projectors from the 1930s, donated by Paramount Pictures, are on exhibit
- Open daily from early morning to midnight
