Do not miss the opening of the historic pub The Punchbowl on Monday, which has undergone a complete refurbishment and emerges with a vison toward bringing the best of the British countryside to the city.
Between the menu, the wine, partnerships and programming with other iconic British brands such as Purdey and Pickett, the Punchbowl celebrates what makes Mayfair special and a symbol of heritage. Book your next lunch or dinner as soon as possible, so as not to miss out on experiencing a new era for this beacon of the local community.
Walking in, the guests is greeted by the warmth and comfort of a traditional English pub, with no detail to finishings and fixtures ignored.
A new staircase has been put in, and a number of original glazed screens removed during the last fit out have been reinstated. The rear has been broken up with snugs and corners that are available for private booking, and on the walls vintage artwork and Punch cartoons. The new spun antique brass and pewter light fittings are suspended from industrial conduit that weaves through the space highlighting the Georgian street map drawn on the ceilings by local street artists, Graffiti Kings, applied with aerosol and marker, which adds character and energy to the cosy interior.
The first floor opens up to a bright restaurant with glamourous 50's vintage inspired décor. The space created is white with light oak hand scraped floors and sandy inset rugs. The room is surrounded by 50's style suede bench seating with reclaimed table tops and deconstructed Victorian chairs. Vintage gilt mirrors decorate the walls with a shimmering gold ceiling that drips down from a hand painted lace frieze inspired by Alexander McQueen.
The second floor has been transformed into a new private dining room, inspired by an art collector's gambling Den. Antique Delft chandeliers, dark green Baize Lewis and Wood wallpaper and a huge mahogany dining table accommodates 14 diners opulently surrounded by an intriguing mix of contemporary and historic oil paintings, sketches and prints.
Chef Nathan Andrews, of Petrus and Colbert on Sloane Square, has crafted a truly special yet traditional series of menus for the pub and upstairs restaurant.
Selections include roasted bone marrow with toasted sourdough, which are full of flavour without being overpowering. Burford Brown Scotch eggs taste so fresh, it's as though they were plucked from the hen house only moments before. Even the pork scratchings are meticulously done, tasty but incredibly light. Loyal to their ethos, the Punchbowl delivers heritage and tradition but to a standard and quality appreciated by any mover and shaker of Mayfair.
