(Macao, June 8, 2013) - Two members of The Philadelphia Orchestra - Cristian Măcelaru and Ryan Fleur - joined Julie Hawkins of Drexel University to lecture on "Engaging Excellence in the World of Music" Saturday afternoon at the Macao Conservatory, in front of an attentive audience of musicians. The Venetian® Macao is Platinum Sponsor for The Philadelphia Orchestra 2013 Residency and Fortieth Anniversary Tour of China - Macao. Full support was received from the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government in organising the lectures for the Macao community. The lecture was made possible as a result of the platinum-tiered sponsorship of The Venetian Macao for the Orchestra's residency and commemorative tour of China.

Members of the Music Association, the Macau Orchestra, the Macau Chinese Orchestra, and students of the Macao Conservatory were invited to attend the free lecture Saturday afternoon, presented by Cristian Măcelaru, Associate Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra; Ryan Fleur, Executive Vice President for Orchestra Advancement of The Philadelphia Orchestra; and Julie Hawkins, Drexel University Program Director and Assistant Professor of Arts Administration.

 

The lecture focused on the following topics:

• The 21st Century Orchestra: Building Excellence and Leadership in Artistry, Administration, and Engagement
• Making Great Music Together: Orchestras as Educators, Ambassadors, and Civic Leaders
• Balancing the Baton: Challenges and Opportunities in the Modern Orchestra

 

About the lecturers:

A strong supporter of music education, Cristian Măcelaru has served as a conductor with the Houston Youth Symphony, where he created a successful chamber music programme. As the founder and artistic director of the Crisalis Music Project, he spearheaded a programme in which young musicians perform in a variety of settings, side by side with established, renowned artists. Măcelaru began studying violin at the age of 6 in his native Romania.

 

Ryan Fleur was trained as a pianist.  He has a BA from Boston University where he studied economics, business, and finance. In 1998, Fleur was appointed Executive Director of Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, one of four professional cooperative orchestras in the United States. He led the orchestra through an international conductor search, an extensive planning process, and a revitalisation of the governing board, while establishing strong programmes in education and community engagement.  

 

Julie Hawkins joined Drexel University as Program Director and Assistant Professor of Arts Administration after serving as Executive Vice President for the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. Her notable advocacy wins include the creation of arts platforms by Mayoral and Gubernatorial candidates, and the restoration of Philadelphia's Office of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy. She also led ground-breaking research projects including the creation of Portfolio, a comprehensive report on the depth, breadth, and health of non-profit cultural organisations.

 

The lecture is one of three community events the Orchestra is participating in as part of The Philadelphia Orchestra 2013 Residency and Fortieth Anniversary Tour of China - Macao. The full Orchestra performed Saturday evening at the Venetian Theatre and is scheduled to perform once more on June 9, with both shows sponsored by Hennessy.
