In September 2014, President Barack Obama will descend upon Wales for the NATO Summit, marking the first time a sitting United States president has visited the nation. While he is sure to have a packed schedule, VisitBritain, the national tourism board for England, Scotland and Wales, has pulled together a few top tips for the President, should he find himself with a little free time. While it is not yet known whether the First Family will be joining the President on his first visit to Wales, perhaps the stunning nature of the country's great outdoors, unique culture and flavorful foods will encourage Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama to jump aboard Air Force One.
Sport
We all know the President loves to shoot hoops in his free time (the little that he has), but did you know he has also been dubbed the 'First Golfer' by some? Wales has several world-class links courses to choose from and if the President is feeling adventurous, perhaps he would like to give rugby, the national sport of Wales, a go?
Cap off a successful day's meetings with a round at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, South Wales, which is hosting the Senior Open Championship in July 2014. If the President is on a time crunch, Celtic Manor itself was voted Europe's Golf Resort of the Year in 2011 and was home to the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Just a 20 mile drive from Celtic Manor, the world famous Millennium Stadium in the capital of Cardiff, will host the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Surely the national team would give the Commander-in-Chief a private lesson!
Active
There is no shortage of outdoor activities for the fitness-minded First Lady to partake in while in Wales. The stunning landscapes that serve as a backdrop to countless active adventures were recently recognized by the readers of the 'Rough Guides' as one of the top 5 places in the world to visit in 2014.
The Wales Coast Path, selected by Lonely Planet as the 'World's Greatest Region' in the 2012 best-in-travel guide, is the first coastal path network to cover an entire country at 870 miles long. Here, the First Lady can walk, jog, or cycle while taking in some of the world's most stunning scenery. While out for a scenic stroll, she may want to check out The Gower Peninsula, the first place in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Brecon Beacons National Park lies on the border between Mid Wales and South Wales and is home to the highest peak in Southern Britain. The 520 square miles of lush greenery, waterfalls, valleys and four mountain ranges is also Wales' first European and UNESCO Global Geopark. The First Lady can walk, cycle and climb her way through one of the country's most recognized landmarks.
Explore the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, which was awarded heritage status in 1972. Part of the Wales Coast Path, Mrs. Obama can take a leisurely stroll by foot, or take to the water with some of the best surfing conditions in Britain.
If The First Lady is looking to immerse her daughters Sasha and Malia in active Wales, the trio can host their own summit at the newly launched Bear Grylls Survival Academy in South Wales. The 24-hour family-focused course is housed near the highest peak in South Wales, Pen y Fan.
Food
Wales is a land rich in local flavor, largely focused on organic and locally sourced products and a mecca for farm-to-table dining. As Michelle Obama is an advocate for healthy eating, she will no doubt be pleased at the bountiful options for her family. Modern Welsh cooking is about the caliber of the ingredients and their relationship with the landscape that produced them. Food ingredients only available in Wales, using Welsh natural resources, enjoy Protected Origin Status.
The Obamas may find lamb flavored by the saltmarshes where it was farmed or Welsh black beef on their dinner plates. A foodie visit to Wales is not complete without a taste laverbread created from seaweed on the Pembrokeshire coast.
If the First Lady finds herself with spare time, a visit to the Bodnant Food Centre in the Conwy Valley, North Wales, is a must. The foodie haven is devoted to Welsh artisan produce and hosts a range of immersive activities including bee-keeping demonstrations and cookery classes. Its array of Welsh products are either made on the premises or supplied from the surrounding area.
Music
Often referred to as “the land of song,” the Welsh are known for their musical passion, often breaking out into song at any occasion. For keen dancers like the First Couple, the musical culture of Wales provides countless opportunities to bust a move. If the president has a night off, the Obamas may want to head into Cardiff for a night out on the town. There is bound to be something entertaining on at the Wales Millennium Centre, which regularly hosts some of the world's leading musical acts, as well as West End theatre, opera, ballet and contemporary dance, standup comedy and even art exhibitions. Set along the picturesque Cardiff Bay, the Obamas can enjoy dinner and drinks before a performance at the centre's bars and restaurant.
Film and TV
Given Malia Obama's newest gig – summer intern for the CBS show Extant, the eldest Obama daughter might be urging her parents to take her to some of Wales' most iconic film locations.
If she is looking to break into TV, there is no better place in Wales to visit than the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff, which takes visitors on an interactive journey through the iconic series. The experience now features walking tours for the first time, taking Whovians around up to thirty-one filming locations across the area.
While mom may want to visit for its outdoor activities, Malia and Sasha will be excited about the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park as it was home to Shell Cottage in Harry Potter & the Deathly Hollows. Although the structure was deconstructed after filming, the girls can still take selfies on the sandy dunes of Freshwater West beach.
