THE MASSIMO VILLA COLLECTION TRIPLES IN SIZE FOR 2016
Having launched with just 20 properties this time last year, the Massimo Villa Collection's portfolio is to triple in size for 2016 offering a far greater selection of beautifully situated Sicilian villas. Hand-picked private holiday villas, either with pools or beside the sea, are located by national parks, beaches and historic villages.
In this fascinating cultural hot-pot of an island, guests can stay in Taormina, Sicily's most dramatic town perched high upon cliffs; in stunning Siracusa - one of the Ancient World's most important cities; within a must-see UNESCO World Heritage site like the honey-coloured stone towns of Ragusa or Modica; or on awe-inspiring Mount Etna with its impressive views. In fact the portfolio stretches from Cefalu in the north to Noto in the south with villas ranging in size (sleeping 2 to 28) and style, from contemporary, coastal properties to restored rural farmhouses.
Visitors who book with Massimo Villas can tap into the team's network of local knowledge with insider tips for experiencing the best of Sicily beaches, whether historical sites, restaurants, little-known gems or local festivals. The services of private chefs, babysitters, local guides and other specialists can be arranged, making it a holiday to remember. With Sicily's varied landscape, sea, and mountains as a backdrop, visitors can swim, dive, hike and climb or simply soak up the Sicilian culture and savour delicious food and wine. The island has something to offer everyone, all year round.
PICK OF THE BEST NEW VILLAS FOR 2016
Il Tanaceto – Castiglione (Mount Etna)
Sicily's Mount Etna region is one of the top new wine regions to sit up and take notice of. With the wine world abuzz with the quality of wines on Etna, thanks to the minerally terroir and high altitude, young winemakers are returning to ancient family vineyards to give them a new lease of life. There are now more than 100 producers working the steep slopes, up from a handful 30 years ago. Perfect for wine lovers, Il Tanaceto is a beautifully restored farmhouse set on Etna's fertile slopes, overlooking the vineyards. Go, see and taste from this chic rural base which boasts five en-suite bedrooms and a swimming pool. Follow footpaths from the door across Etna National Park, stopping for a tasting at one of the wineries - guided walks and tastings can be organised by Massimo Villas. Price: one week's self-catering costs rental from £1,147, sleeping 10.
Villa Mondello – Mondello (near Palermo)
This villa provides a wonderful base for a taste of both beach and city life. Set in a lush garden with lawns and palm trees, guests can dine on the large terraces and relax by the private pool on the decked area and sun loungers. Ideal for a group of friends or a large family get together, the property comprises a main house for four, a cottage for four, and a separate annexe for two. Traditional terracotta and colourful tiled floors give the property a distinctly Sicilian feel. A scenic location, Mondello has a wonderful backdrop of mountains, while the sandy white beach stretches for a mile and a half. Shops and restaurants in Mondello are within walking distance of the villa, while the delights of Palermo are an easy drive or bus ride away. Price: one week's self-catering rental costs from £2,313, sleeping 10.
La Grotta - Modica
With the 10th series of TV detective, Montalbano, now in the pipeline, guests can stay in the heart of the dramatic baroque town of Modica, which doubles as the fictional town of Vigàta. Situated in the historic centre of Modica, La Grotta is a rather special base for exploring south east Sicily. The seemingly simple exterior of the townhouse belies the spacious interior which is literally carved out of the honey coloured rock, with vaulted ceilings and exposed stone walls lit to enhance its rustic beauty. The furnishings are an eclectic mix of contemporary colour and traditional materials, from grey floor tiles and seating to colourful artworks and Sicilian ceramics. An open plan living space under a vaulted ceiling leads to the living area while the bedroom comes with a cave-like en suite bathroom, from which the house takes its name. Exploring beautiful Modica with its winding streets and chocolate shops is a joy, while the town of Scicli and the coast are just a short drive away. Price: one week's self-catering rental costs from £481, sleeping 2.
Villa Le Sorbe - Marina di Caronia
Surrounded by extensive private grounds, Le Sorbe consists of two villas sharing a terrace and pool area. Ideal for two groups on holiday together, each one sleeps six. About 500m away below the house is a private path which leads from a garden gate, under a couple of bridges to Le Sorbe's private pebble beach. Another pathway from the house leads up through the olive groves to a lake and views of the coastline and mountains behind. There are many local shops and restaurants just a five minute drive away, while for a day of sightseeing visit nearby Cefalù, with its stunning beach and famous Norman cathedral, or Tindari with its Greek theatre and Roman remains. Price: one week's self-catering rental costs from £2,108 (with 6 sharing) or from £2,960 (with 12 sharing).
