The Kvarner Region – a place that has always been visited for health purposes

Kvarner Region Tourist Board (English)

The Kvarner effect or simply Kvarner aromatherapy in the open air. The bura – a dry, cold wind that blows from a north-east direction and brings cold and fresher weather – is the engine that drives the healing process known as the Kvarner effect. This wind comes into contact with the surface of the sea, which releases sea particles into the air. It's something like spraying processed seawater from a spray. But in Kvarner, this process takes place in style: the bura moves the sea, the waves lap against the shore, and the finest particles of sea salt, trace elements and minerals fly through the air. Sodium, magnesium, iodine, calcium, potassium, silicon, manganese and cobalt travel through the air and penetrate the deepest regions of the pulmonary alveoli. And at the centre of this whole process is you and your whole body. And you breathe. Deeply. Enjoying this fantastic healing therapy.

With a Mediterranean climate, more than 200 sunny days a year, and medicinal herbs, it seems that all the prerequisites for a healthy environment are present in Kvarner. But there's something else that's very important.

The bura wind, like all winds, has the task of providing the basis for life - negative ions. 'Isn't the basis of life oxygen?', you ask. Yes, but oxygen can reach the blood through the lung membranes only with the help of negative ions. The friction of air and water stimulates the movement of electrons that fly freely, creating negative ions.

It has been scientifically proven that positive ions have healing properties: they improve health in the case of asthma, bronchitis, allergies, and hypertension; aid the healing of wounds and burns, and relieve or even eliminate headaches and migraines, stimulating a good mood.

The Greek physician Galen first wrote the recipe: 'breathe the air along the rocks on which the sea waves crash' (2nd century BC). This is a drug without a barcode. This is a drug with no side effects. This is a drug that has no price and is available to everyone.

It's up to you to choose a climatic coastal health resort in Kvarner with a proven health effect (climatotherapy and thalassotherapy) to visit: Opatija, Crikvenica or Lošinj. Certified health institutions use both the latest equipment and knowledge as well as centuries-old tradition to perform the following treatments:

Thalassotherapia Opatija – rehabilitation and prevention programmes for cardiovascular diseases

Thalassotherapia Crikvenica – respiratory and physical rehabilitation, paediatric treatments, cardiological and dermatovenerological programmes

The sea has a magnetic effect on humans. Maybe this is because when life in the sea began to move onto the land, part of the sea remained in it. And it's still in us today. In 1897, René Quinton discovered that the human body and seawater have the same mineral composition.

Today, Kvarner offers a wide range of health and preventive treatments: from walks along fragrant forest paths and swimming in the sea to modern wellness methods. There's also the Terme Selce polyclinic with its 25-year tradition in the rehabilitation of athletes, many of whom are Olympic winners such as Janica and Ivica Kostelić, Luka Modrić, Ivica Olić, Ana Jelušić, the Croatian golden water polo team, and many patients from abroad: Mikaela Shiffrin, FC Barcelona footballers, etc.

The services of Kvarner dental clinics have become recognised in Europe as high quality and affordable, thanks to Directive 2011/24/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on the application of patients' rights in cross-border healthcare.

In times when we're feeling exhausted and weak, keep in mind that there's a place where we can come to for our health, a place similar to where life began: the sea. The sea is there for all of us, and you're always welcome in Kvarner.
