The Headland Hotel in Newquay has proudly announced that they will be joining The 'Final Straw Cornwall' Campaign with their pledge to ditch single use plastic straws and convert to recyclable paper straws from now on.

The announcement was made by their Deputy Hotel Manager Jamie Crossman during his talk at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards, hosted by the Headland Hotel last Friday. The whole team, from owners to senior managers and the hospitality team, are committed to the campaign which resonates with a hotel so deeply connected to the ocean and the Cornish Coast.

Owned by John and Carolyn Armstrong for almost forty years, The Headland employs around 150 people, has 96 bedrooms, 39 self-catering cottages and welcomes thousands of guests each year. Enjoying a unique position on the cliffs overlooking Fistral Beach, the hotel's management team have always made protecting their extraordinary natural surroundings a priority.

“Our environment has always been integral to our values as a business,” said General Manager Darryl Reburn. “As one of our affiliated charities, we've raised more than £30,000 for the National Trust over the years and we're always looking for new ways to improve our sustainability and reduce our environmental impact. 

“The Final Straw campaign is doing an excellent job of raising awareness of the damage plastic causes and we're delighted to be part of it. Not only will we stop using plastic straws ourselves, we'll also do as much as we can to encourage our visitors to stop using them when they go out and about in the county too.”

Cornwall is aiming to become the first plastic straw free county in the UK.
