Guyana wins #1 in 'Best of Ecotourism'

At ITB in Berlin, the second annual 'Best of Top 100' awards took place with an expert panel selecting the finest top 100 destinations in a series of categories with Guyana winning the 'Best of Ecotourism'. Guyana was given the title on accounts of its considerable efforts and expenditure to develop new and innovative eco-friendly tourism products. The small South American nation has incorporated sustainable practices into all aspects of its strategy, planning and programming while educating the world on how to maximise the positive socio-economic and conservation outcomes from tourism. www.greendestinations.org/2019-top100-awards

The best-seller describes the life French prisoners experienced in the penal colony of French Guiana.

Jungle Kayak Expedition with Bushmasters

The Jungle Kayak Expedition from Bushmasters will take intrepid explorers up the many winding rivers of Guyana's pristine Amazonia. Evergreen Adventures set to launch new Lethem Weekend tour

Local Guyana tour operator, Evergreen Adventures, has announced that it will be launching a new Lethem Weekend tour. The tour will depart from Eugene. F. Correia International Airport and visit sites such as Kumu Falls, a series interconnected cascading waterfalls, before heading to some of the indigenous villages neighbouring Lethem to meet the locals and learn about their culture. The tour also includes horse riding at the new Waikin Ranch, a sunset drive into the savannahs, fishing, and sampling local Guyanese cuisine. Bartica Easter Regatta

From 18 to 22 April 2019, Bartica a town at the meeting point of the Mazaruni, Cuyuni and Essequibo Rivers will host the Bartica Regatta. The event features a number of activities such as water sports, talent shows, a street parade, and a Bartica Pageant although the main attraction is the Power Boat race. People travel from all over Guyana and even other countries to root for their favourite boats and drivers. As is customary in Caribbean culture the festival is finished with a 'Regatta Wash Down' featuring music, food and drink on the beach. www.bartica.gov.gy

Rupununi Rodeo

From 19 to 22 April 2019, one of the most eagerly-awaited, adrenaline-fuelled events takes place in Lethem. Spectators donning cowboy hats and plaid shirts gather to see ta host of ranch-related events. Cowboys and cowgirls compete in bull riding, horse racing, wild cow milking, steer roping and a number of other exhilarating events. Away from the action there is a buzz among the crowd as visitors enjoy fairground rides, local food, and afro-inspired music. Indian Arrival Day

On 5 May 2019, the Indian population of Guyana will celebrate their history and culture on what is known as Indian Arrival Day. The descendants of Indians brought to Guyana now make up 44% of the population and celebrate with fair featuring music, dances, and an array of goods on offer such as handicrafts, clothing and jewellery.
