Golf: Since 1910, golf has been an important part of life at The Greenbrier. With three championship courses and the Golf Digest Academy, The Greenbrier is unmatched in its dedication to golfers. The first eighteen hole course was The Old White Course, designed by Charles Blair MacDonald in 1913. The Greenbrier Course was built in 1924 and renovated in 1977 by Jack Nicklaus. In 1979 the Greenbrier Course hosted the International Ryder Cup Matches and in 1994, was the site of the Solheim Cup Matches. The Meadows Course, formerly known as the Lakeside Course, reopened in 1999 after a complete course redesign by Robert Cupp.
The Greenbrier Spa: For 226 years, guests have been attracted to The Greenbrier's sulphur springs and the natural benefits of the minerals remain at the heart of The Greenbrier Spa experience. The Greenbrier Spa's treatments complement today's lifestyle, with greater attention to the healing powers of natural essences and minerals that have been trusted for centuries. Treatments include The Greenbrier Signature Treatment, Detoxifying Mud Wrap, ThermaStone Massage, Olive Oil Body Scrub and Mineral Body Mask. Other services include facials, hydrotherapy treatments, body boosters, hand and foot treatments. Salon Vivace offers a full range of hair care services.
Culinary Arts Center: For 27 years, The Greenbrier has offered guests the opportunity to hone their culinary skills in a variety of cooking classes. The culinary offerings include the five-day LaVarenne at The Greenbrier featuring founder Anne Willan and renowned guest chefs and instructors as well as the three-day Barbecue University with Steven Raichlen. Half-day hands on classes for adults and children ages 6-12 are offered in season and feature a variety of menus.
Outdoor Activities: With 6500 acres in the scenic Allegheny Mountains, The Greenbrier is the perfect setting for a myriad of outdoor activities. Guests can enjoy The Greenbrier Off-Road Driving School or take to the skies in a hot air balloon. The Greenbrier�s Gun Club has four combination trap and skeet fields along with a 10-station sporting clays course designed by Justin Jones and John Higgins of the British School of Shooting. Tennis enthusiasts love The Greenbrier�s five HarTru outdoor courts and five Dynaturf indoor courts. With streams available on and off-property, guests have a variety of options for fishing. Greenbrier guests can also learn about Falconry, the ancient sport of kings with beginner and intermediate lessons. The Greenbrier also offers whitewater rafting, horseback riding, carriage rides, trails for walking and hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, an alpine climbing tower, croquet, horseshoes and shuffleboard.
Family Activities: In addition to the numerous outdoor activities, The Greenbrier offers a variety of family activities. Swimming is available in the resort�s historic indoor pool or the new, zero-entry, infinity edge outdoor pool. Adjacent to the indoor pool is the bowling facility, with eight lanes, two billiard tables, table tennis and electronic games. Complimentary movies are shown nightly in The Greenbrier�s theatre and the Main Lobby level offers tables for chess, checkers, backgammon and bridge.
Children�s Activities: The Greenbrier�s Adventure Zone provides a fun and memorable experience for children ages 3-12. The Adventure Zone incorporates activities such as Carnegie Hall West Virginia�s Creative Classrooms, outdoor activities such as fishing and scavenger hunts and more.
Historic Activities: With The Greenbrier�s rich history spanning more than two centuries, guests are given the opportunity to learn more about that history through interior tours, grounds tours and slide presentations. One of the more popular amenities at The Greenbrier is a tour of the former US Government Relocation Facility, or bunker. This 112,000 sq. ft. facility was built during the Cold War and was a secret for 30 years. This facility would have been used by Congress in the event of a national emergency. The bunker will be closing for renovations on July 28, 2004. Tours will resume in approximately 12 to 18 months once the renovations are complete.
Shopping: No trip to The Greenbrier is complete without a bit of shopping. With over 30 stores, shopping at The Greenbrier is a delight all its own. Most of the shops are located in the hotel�s lower level, including The Greenbrier Shoppe and Newsstand, Carleton Varney Gift Gallery, Polo Ralph Lauren, The Greenbrier Gourmet Shop and many others. The Art Colony on Alabama Row features a collection of shops with unique handcrafted items and exceptional pieces of original art. Finally, The Christmas Shop at the Depot is located across from the main entrance and is open year round with gifts and decorations to make every Christmas special.
