The Great Barrier Reef's Surprising New Destination

Southern Great Barrier Reef

The Southern Great Barrier Reef is the newest destination on the Great Barrier Reef, and is quickly gaining momentum as one of the most desirable locations to visit in Queensland. The Southern Great Barrier Reef starts 370km north of Brisbane and stretches for 300km from Bundaberg to the Capricorn Coast. This part of the reef boasts all year swimming, giant marine life, a diversity of coral types and uncrowded locations.

The proximity of the Southern Great Barrier Reef to the South East corner of Queensland is one of its greatest selling points. A visitor can experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef without having to travel to the far north. The region has a strong 'self-drive' market but is also easily accessible by air (Qantaslink and Virgin Australia) and Queensland Rail.

Tourism Queensland's, Southern Great Barrier Reef Director, Trevor Cox, says "The Southern Great Barrier Reef is a destination of contrasts - it has big coral and big marine encounters, yet you escape the crowds and can feel at one with nature. The region boasts quality product and has accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets".

The Southern Great Barrier Reef offers visitors the chance to witness turtles hatching at the largest turtle rookery in mainland Australia, dive with giant Mantaray at Lady Elliot Island, ride the amphibious LARC in the birthplace of Queensland - Town of 1770, experience 'glamping' on a coral cay, or enjoy a beach all to yourself on Great Keppel Island.

Veteran Travel Agent, Bob Devereux, from The Travel Brokers New Zealand says, "After participating in a recent famil to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, I am so excited about this region that I am of the belief that there should be a direct air service from Auckland to Rockhampton. Rockhampton is a Gateway to more of Queensland than just the Southern Great Barrier Reef, ask me, I would love to show you".

The Southern Great Barrier Reef will truly deliver the reef experience of a life time - one that you never expected, but one that will stay with you forever.
