Villa Sola Cabiati, artistic and historic heritage A story of refinement, tranquillity and relaxation since 1700 Giuseppe Parini, poet, writer, the greatest representative of the Italian Enlightenment and, most notably, tutor to Duke Gian Galeazzo Serbelloni (1754-1762), described the Serbelloni family's beloved summer residence, sitting on the Riviera Tremezzina, as “La Quiete”. Indeed in the second half of the 18th century, it was Gian Galeazzo Serbelloni, son of Gabrio and Maria Vittoria Ottoboni, who gave the villa its current appearance: the grand building flanked by two side wings, the large staircase, the marble balconies, the blue shutters – an homage to the lake waters – and the beautiful Italian garden, divided into four elegant parterres bursting with flowers, with parkland dotted with ferns and sweet-smelling trees sloping up towards the mountain. In addition to the extraordinary collection of tapestries, vases and majolica, the villa also boasts some examples of fine furniture, including the bed slept in by Napoleon and his wife Joséphine de Following Luisa Serbelloni's marriage to marquis Lodovico Busca, the property passed to the marquis' family. The elegance and splendour of the villa did not go unnoticed by their contemporaries, with Carlo Amoretti, an 18th century scientist and art scholar from Milan, writing: “Tremezzo counts many pleasant and magnificent villas, Villa Clerici, Villa Sommariva, the villas of the Brentani, Mainoni, and De Carli families, and yet la Quiete of the Serbelloni, and now of the Busca family, exceeds them all.” In 1813, the architect Francesco Bernardini Ferrari designed the splendid mooring, described at the time as “four majestic set of steps shaded by sycamores, leading towards Villa Quiete”. |
