Contrary to popular perception, ancient Israelite religion was not limited to a simple monotheistic faith centred in the Temple in Jerusalem and controlled and conducted by its personnel. Both archaeology and the Bible have shown that in Old Testament times the people of Israel and Judah worshipped a variety of different gods and goddesses.
What is the evidence for this claim? Who or what were these gods and goddesses? Where did they come from? Were they mainstream, or peripheral? And how did they affect the worship of the one true God in the Jerusalem Temple?
In this slide-supported lecture Dr Gilmore looks at both Archaeology and the Bible to consider religion in biblical Israel and Judah, official and popular, orthodox and unorthodox.
