A 640-page book entitled The Dolder Grand will be published at the beginning of May 2009. The photographic journal by photographers Nadja Athanasiou, Michael Bhler and Peter Lem documents the hotels metamorphosis, from its closure in 2004, its conversion and renovation, to its reopening in 2008. The result is a comprehensive book detailing the Dolder Grands evolution through over 400 photos.
The publication "The Dolder Grand" provides an unusual insight into the world of a luxury hotel. It is being published shortly after the first anniversary of the Dolder Grands reopening in April 2008 following a four year closure for conversion and renovation. The 640-page book with over 400 images is being published in English by Lars Mller Publishers and will be available in bookshops for CHF 199.00 (EUR 119.00).
The three photographers Nadja Athanasiou, Michael Bhler and Peter Lem were commissioned at the end of 2003 by Urs E. Schwarzenbach, Chairman of the Dolder Hotel AG and joined forces under the name Nave to produce this book. The books photographic documentary begins a few months before the closure of the old Dolder Grand Hotel, at a time when the glory days of the fin-de-sicle period were long past and only traces of the hotels glitz and glamour were still to be found.
An archive of thousands of images was built up over a period of five years. It took the photographers many sessions to select the pictures and choreograph the narrative and the result is a comprehensive photographic documentary that highlights the many facets of the metamorphosis. It also portrays the people who made it all possible. The photographic journal is not a linear documentation; instead it is a complex narrative, full of contrasts and associations of words and images.
The texts by journalist Judith Wyder pull back the curtain even further, they tell stories and anecdotes and give a hint of the immensity of the logistical operation involved in running a hotel. Details of the restoration sit side by side with the history of the hotel itself and the names of prominent guests.
An exclusive literary essay included in the book by the Dutch writer Cees Nooteboom begins with the question What is a hotel? It tells of travel, the hotel as a microcosm and temporary home and the phenomenon of the adoption of hotels by their guests.
