Nearly 4 million visitors can't be wrong: Düsseldorf's Biggest fun fair on the Rhine (12 - 21 July 2013) is among Germany's top outdoor festivals. The 10 days of fun for the whole family on the Rhine River offer great entertainment during the height of the summer. Among the highlights are the historical parade and the spectacular fireworks on July 19.
With a history of 112 years, Düsseldorf's Biggest fun fair on the Rhine is now one of Germany's top outdoor festivals and offers great entertainment during the warmest season. Set for ten days on the gorgeous fairgrounds on the Rhine River right across from the city's center, visitors will find beer tents with live music, costumed servers, and all imaginable German fest food delicacies from savory to sweet: sausage, roast, pig knuckles to potatoes and sauerkraut to apple cake, ginger bread and much more. For kids of all ages, there are state-of-the-art rides (some of the world's biggest temporary rides in the world are featured here) and all kinds of family entertainment options, including the historical parade on July 14th and especially the spectacular huge fireworks on July 19th.
Getting to the fair from Düsseldorf's center - the historic Old Town and home to the "Longest Bar in the World" (260 bars, pubs and restaurants in under a square mile) - is half the fun: a ferry takes revelers from one side of the Rhine River to the other and drops them off right at the fair.
This year, there's also another option for a trip on the Rhine: a Rhine River cruise during the closing fireworks on July 19th on the "MS Riverstar," at €75 per person. The cruise, which starts at 7:00 pm and ends at 11:30 pm, includes a dinner buffet, music, and perfect firework viewing from the boat's open-air deck.
Another rare recipe for the success of the Biggest fun fair on the Rhine is mixing family entertainment with gay parties: on the first Monday of the huge 10-days fair, thousands of gays and lesbians show up to celebrate the Pink Monday, Düsseldorf's biggest LGBTQ event.
In 2013 the event keeps growing by leaps and bounds - as does tourism to the city. Düsseldorf broke the 4 million mark in overnight stays for the first time in 2012, testimony to the fact that the city, which is Number 6 on a list of global cities in quality of life, is fast becoming a must-see stop for many Germany travelers.
