In September, the Balearic Islands have welcomed a host of new restaurant openings, events, hotel developments and eco-friendly initiatives, making autumn the perfect time of the year to visit the islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.  Here the Balearic Islands tourism board highlights some of the latest openings and tourism developments from the Mediterranean islands:

GASTRO NEWS

NEW SEAFOOD RESTAURANT OPENS IN MALLORCA

A new seafood restaurant called Salicornia has opened in Colonia de Sant Jordi in Mallorca. The restaurant has a contemporary Mediterranean ambience with a traditional menu including coca de trampo – a pizza like bread topped with peppers, onions and anchoviesas well as a steak tartar with Paris coffee butter or Spanish classics such as arroz brut (a soupy rice dishes made with lightly spiced meat and vegetables) and fideu (a paella like dish with noodles instead of rice). www.salicorniarestaurant.com

NEW CAMBUSA GUSTO ITALIAN RESTAURANT OPENS IN SANTA CATALINA IN MALLORCA

Following the success of its sister restaurant in Antigua, Cambusa Gusto has recently opened in the district of Santa Catalina in Palma. The name Cambusa Gusto means 'galley style' and thus caters for what was once a historic destination for seafarers. Cambusa Gusto offers diners a modern Italian menu with dishes such as Pasta Carbonara, Cipriani beef Carpaccio or Caciucco Livornese. www.cambusa.me

LA GREPPIA RESTAURANT REVAMPED WITH REFURBISHMENT AND NEW MENU

La Greppia, located opposite the Marivent Palace in Palma, known as being one of the first Italian restaurants to open in Mallorca, has recently been refurbished in a modern and chic style with 'mood lighting', wall-length mirrors and wooden floors. The restaurant has also introduced a new menu featuring Italian specialities such as Cappelli funghi porcini, Ossobuco Alla Milanese, and Prosciutto Calzone. www.restaurantelagreppia.com/en

FABIOLA GASTRO GARDEN, PALMA, MALLORCA

This month saw the opening of the Fabiola Gastronomic Garden in the Boutique Hotel Sant Jaume located in the heart of Palma. The new restaurant features a Mediterranean menu designed for sharing with a focus on fresh produce that includes Spanish garlic Soller shrimps and roasted octopus with paprika aioli. Headed up by chef Juan Melis the restaurant offers diners a taste of Mallorcan specialities in an authentic laid-back atmosphere. www.fabiolagastronomicgarden.com

OCEANIC GLOBAL FOUNDATION AND ATZARO CONFIRM SUSTAINABILITY EVENT, IBIZA

The Oceanic Global Foundation and Atzaro Hotel are teaming up to host Ibiza's first free event that provides sustainability solutions to the hospitality industry. The objective of the event is to start a discussion on how to reduce single-use plastics and advise industry leaders on how to improve their environmental footprint. The event is in keeping with Ibiza's pledge to eliminate single-use plastics by 2020 which has catalysed other initiatives such as the launch of the 'Make Ibiza Plastic Free' hessian bag range from LOVE IBIZA NOW. www.atzaro.com

CHILDREN STAY FOR FREE AT LUXURY CAN LLUC BOUTIQUE HOTEL

In 2018, Luxury Can Lluc Boutique Hotel located in Ibiza had the delight of seeing the hotel's swimming pool ranked in the top ten in the world according to 'Rusticae'. In honour of the award, the hotel is offering an exclusive offer with up to two children being able to stay free of charge on bookings made for a minimum of four nights in a double standard superior salon, or villa. THE NAKAR HOTEL RESUMES HUGELY POPULAR SUNDAY BRUNCH SERVICE, MALLORCA

The Nakar Hotel, situated in the old town of Palma, has resumed its popular Sunday brunch service after the summer season. EASYJET TO OPERATE TWICE WEEKLY WINTER FLIGHTS TO MENORCA

In November 2018, EasyJet Airlines will launch a twice weekly flight from London Gatwick to Menorca, becoming the only airline to fly to the island during the winter months. The new flights have been introduced as part of a partnership between easyJet Airlines and the Menorca tourism board to encourage travel to Menorca during the low season and to strengthen Menorca's position as a winter destination from the UK. The flights will operate from November until 30 April for the next three years, from 2018 to 2021, on aircrafts with a capacity for 162 passengers. www.menorca.es / www.easyjet.com

MENORCA TO HOST WORLD PADEL TOUR FROM 2019 UNTIL 2022

The Menorca tourism board has recently announced that Menorca, will become one of the 17 countries to welcome the World Padel Tour, for the next four years from 2019 until 2022. The World Padel Tour is the most important padel tennis competition in the world, which welcomes thousands of padel enthusiasts every year. The first edition of the Padel Tour, called the Estrella Damm Menorca Open, will take place from 20-27 October 2019 in the capital Mahon and Sant Lluis bringing together the best padel players in the world including Fernando Belasteguin, Pablo Lima, Maria Jose and Maria Pilar Sanchez Alayeto, and Gemma Triay and Lucia Sainz. www.menorca.es 

THE AMOREVORE FOOD AND ARTS FESTIVAL CONFIRM GUEST SPEAKER LINE UP

Ibiza is set to welcome the first ever Amorevore Food and Arts Festival from 28-30 October at the Agrotourism Hotel Casa Maca Ibiza. The three day festival will celebrate the ibicencan arts and gastronomic scene with workshops, a farmer's market, food tastings and live music and performances. An impressive line-up of guest speakers has also been announced with food writer and TV chef Jasmine Hemsley who will be joined by Gill Meller (River Cottage), Craig Sams (Green & Blacks/Wholefoods) and Boris Buono (formerly NOMA).  www.amorevorefoodfestival.com

160 VOLUNTEERS COLLECT ONE TONNE OF RUBBISH IN FORMENTERA

In September 2018, 160 volunteers split into nine groups collected around one tonne of waste from Formentera's beaches and surrounding sea. The initiative was part of World Clean Up Day and took place in Capella de sa Tanca Vella, Cala en Baster, Migjorn, la playa de es Pujols, Cala Saona, es Caló de Sant Agustí and in parts of Formentera's surrounding sea. www.worldcleanupday.org

BRITISH AIRWAYS TO CONTINUE FLIGHTS TO PALMA AND IBIZA DURING WINTER

After the busy summer schedule of Balearic Islands services from regional airports ends this September, British Airways will continue to operate flights to Palma and Ibiza as a year-round service. With flights continuing into the winter season from London City Airport, passengers will be able to enjoy the benefits of a quicker check in and boarding than at any other London airport. www.ba.com
