The Balearic Islands

With a host of new hotel openings, gastronomic developments and some exciting autumnal events in the pipeline, the Balearic Islands continue to be a top destination of choice for UK travellers. Here the Balearic Islands tourism board lists the latest news from the islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera and Ibiza.

HOTEL NEWS

Concept Hotel Group opens two new properties in Ibiza

Ibicencan hotel group 'Concept' has recently welcomed two new luxury properties on the white island; 'Cubanito Ibiza Suites' and the 'Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel'.

'Cubanito Ibiza Suites' is located on the west coast of Ibiza a few metres from Cala Gracio, an idyllic beach near San Antonio bay. The art-deco hotel is designed with a colonial Caribbean style reminiscent of Little Havana with Cuban-inspired rooms, a tropical garden perfect for enjoying an ice-cool cocktail, and a dance floor called 'El Malecon'. www.cubanitoibiza.com

Located in the centre of San Antonio bay, 'Paradiso Art Hotel' gives a nod to art-deco with pale pink and lavender tones and colourful 70s furniture. The hotel is conveniently located within minutes of the beach and has two swimming pools and custom designed suites all including Marshall speakers, a Smeg fridge and furniture characteristic of the 70's. www.paradisoibiza.com  

Sa Pedrera Suites & Spa opens in Formentera

Sa Pedrera Suites & Spa, a complex of 29 luxury suites, has opened in Es Pujols in northern Formentera. Located within walking distance of the closest beaches, the complex also offers a restaurant serving local delicacies, an outdoor pool, a wellness area and a gym. A one night stay in a junior suite is priced from €175 per person including breakfast. www.sapedrerasuites.com

Designer Matthew Williamson completes suite at Belmond La Residencia in Deia, Mallorca

A new signature suite at luxury hotel Belmond La Residencia, located in Deia, has been completed by designer Matthew Williamson. Suite 67 at Belmond La Residencia takes inspiration from the hotel's rich history, local architecture and scenery with the designer having worked closely with local craftspeople and artists. Cappuccino Gran Café now in Puerto Soller, Mallorca  

The prestigious Spanish coffee and restaurant group 'Cappuccino' has opened a new establishment in Puerto Soller on the west coast of Mallorca. The new café has a large and airy terrace overlooking the port's pretty horseshoe bay, pristine beaches and old fishing harbour. The café is open for breakfast and lunch and is an idyllic spot to enjoy a cocktail as the sun goes down behind the harbour. www.grupocappucino.com

New-fine dining restaurant in Palma, Mallorca 

A new restaurant called Fera has opened in the centre of Palma, the capital of Mallorca. The restaurant, bar and gallery is located on the group floor of the Círculo Mallorquin, one of Palma's most celebrated old town palaces. The restaurant offers a modern and peaceful environment in which guests can enjoy lunch, gourmet dinners and meals in a private dining room. The menu includes a variety of Asian-Mediterranean options such as oysters with salmon eggs, bluefin tuna and Angus beef. www.ferapalma.com

Bala Roja opens in Hotel Es Princep in Palma, Mallorca  

Bala Roja is the latest haute-cuisine restaurant to be inaugurated at luxury boutique hotel Es Princep in Palma. Headed up by Mallorcan chef Andreu Genestra, the restaurant offers guests artfully presented five-star food that combines innovation with traditional Mallorcan cuisine in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The restaurant offers a choice of two menus priced from €56 or €74. www.esprincep.com

La Dispensa del Baron restaurant welcomes new Chef   

Traditional Mallorcan restaurant, La Dispensa del Baron located in the Posada Terra Santa hotel in Palma welcomes new chef David Raya. Raya trained in Barcelona at Michelin star restaurant Roca Moo working alongside Spanish tapas and pintxos champion chef Igor Rodriguez San, and later with Fernando Pérez Arellano, head chef at Zaranda – the only restaurant in Mallorca to have two Michelin stars. New beach-side restaurant opens in Talamanca, Ibiza

Bikini by Cathy Guetta, former wife of DJ David Guetta, is the latest beach restaurant to open in the heart of Ibiza in Talamanca. The restaurant features an outdoor terrace overlooking the med, perfect for dining al-fresco, decorated in pink and green vintage hues. The restaurant is open daily from 8am until 3am and offers guests traditional Ibicencan dishes made with fresh locally-sourced ingredients. www.bikinibycathyguetta.com

Iconic Formentera beach club launches in Ibiza

Iconic beach club from Formentera, Beso Beach, has recently launched on Ses Salines beach on the south coast of Ibiza. The club offers Mediterranean cuisine fused with Basque influences in laid-back and peaceful location overlooking the sea. www.besobeach.com

AIRLINE NEWS

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays boosts services to the Balearic Islands 

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, have recently announced an increase in flights to Ibiza and Menorca outside of the summer season. Flights to Ibiza have been added from Birmingham, East Midlands, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle between late September and the end of October 2018, and twice-weekly flights have been added in April 2019 from Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and London Stansted. The company will also be increasing flights to Menorca between September and November 2018 with additional services from Birmingham, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle Airports. www.jet2.com / www.jet2holidays.com

British Airways improves Palma flight schedule  

This summer 2018, British Airways is operating an improved flying schedule to Palma, Mallorca. With additional flights added from London City in August, passengers will be able to enjoy the benefits of a quicker check in and boarding than at any other London airport. The airline will also operate routes between the Balearic Islands and a range of regional airports including Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Birmingham and London Stansted. www.ba.com

AUTUMN EVENTS IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS

Mallorca Classic Car Week, Palma, Mallorca (19-23 September)

Classic car owners are brought together for a week of processions, awards, showcases and driving routes on the islands of Mallorca. Expect beautiful cars from the last century in this relaxed and nostalgic event. Free entry. www.mallorcaclassicweek.com

Gràcia Festival, Mahon, Menorca (6-9 September)

During the Gràcia Festival three-day celebration, the residents of Mahón, Menorca's capital city, honour their patron, 'Our Lady of Grace' with a pilgrimage to the chapel followed by a series of horse processions and races in the city's streets. This is the perfect opportunity to see the famous Menorcan horses in action. Free entry. www.menorca.es

Palma de Mallorca Marathon (14 October)

Enjoy a little end-of-year sunshine with a running trip to Palma this autumn. The Palma de Mallorca Marathon offers a 10k, a half marathon and a full length marathon. The race starts by the sea on the Passeig Marítim (seafront promenade), opposite the Palma cathedral and offers one of Europe's most attractive running routes. www.palmademallorcamarathon.com

Volta Menorca BBT (19-21 October)

One of the most keenly anticipated events in the cycling world, the Volta Menorca BBT takes around 500 mountain bike riders around the incredible natural landscapes of the islands. Now in its 13th year, three routes take place across the weekend with different levels of difficulty and elevation. Registration will close on 17 October 2018. www.menorcabtt.com

Ibiza Triathlon (27 October)

A breathtaking challenge from the sea to the mountains, the island of Ibiza invites amateur and professional athletes to test themselves with a cycling, swimming and running race through the island's beautiful landscapes. www.triatlonibiza.com

Volta Cicloturista Formentera (26-28 October)

The Balearic Islands are a haven for cyclists and the BBT Formentera brings mountain bike excitement to the island. Comprising of three stages; Sant Francesc, Pilar de La Mola and La Savina, the race provides cyclists with spectacular views of the whole of Formentera. www.bttformentera.net
