Founded 30 years ago, the festival is classical music based with a strong literary and visual arts element.  Events are held in various impressive venues in the glorious surroundings of the Malvern Hills

Professional orchestras, performers and speakers, often of international stature are engaged. Examples are the European Union Chamber Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, and Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Razumovsky Ensemble, Guildhall Strings, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Chamber music concerts have included the St Petersburg String Quartet from Russia, the Skampa and Martinu Quartet from the Czech Republic and the Sorrel and Fitzwilliam Quartets from Britain plus the BBC Singers.

During September and October there are free events with Street Musicians and Folk Dancers. The festival collaborates with an annual Arts & Crafts Street Market. National Poetry Day always falls during the festival and is marked with a particular event.

In 2020 the festival will mark the 200th Anniversary of Jenny Lind's –
