The Australian War Memorial Named Top Landmark in Australia

VisitCanberra

The Australian War Memorial in Canberra has replaced the Sydney Opera House as Australia's most loved landmark in TripAdvisor's Traveller's Choice awards.

The architecturally-designed shrine and expansive museum is dedicated to the men and women who have served our country and has long been considered one of the most important landmarks in Australia.

Canberra made two appearances in TripAdvisor's Top 10 Landmarks – Australia, with the nation's iconic Parliament House coming in at number nine.

The TripAdvisor's Traveller's Choice Awards are determined by the website's reviewers, using an algorithm that takes into account the quantity and quality of reviews as well as the ratings for man-made landmarks worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.

Nabbing lead position from the Sydney Opera House (2015 South Pacific Travellers' Choice Winning Landmark), the Australian War Memorial topped the Australian list for 2016. The Memorial also ranked 23rd in the world's top man made landmarks category.

“This award is fantastic, and a fitting recognition for one of Australia's most significant attractions,” VisitCanberra Director Ian Hill said.

“A visit to the Australian War Memorial should be on everyone's must-do list. This TripAdvisor award win comes off the back of record visitation to Canberra, with 4.4 million visitors to Australia's capital in the year ending December 2015.”

While this evolving capital city may be better known as Australia's political hub, Canberra is also the place to discover Australia's stories through an array of national attractions that hold and tell the nation's story. For travel inspiration head to visitcanberra.com.au
