The quaint island of Sifnos has long been associated with the art of pottery since ancient times. However, it was in the last century that the local potters created a very lucrative industry and their pottery was exported not only on mainland Greece but also where there were Greek communities! The island of Sifnos is closely linked with the growth of the pottery since ancient times due to the quality of the soil and the abundance of the right ingredients to create clay! The pottery or angioplasty flourished firstly in the island as the potters produced items for domestic use but soon after the threat of piracy was removed the potteries moved to protected little ports from where they could export their goods to the surrounding areas. The skills of the Sifnian potters were such and the increase in demand that they immigrated to other areas to make and sell their wares!!
Today, there are 19 potteries in the island. They are mainly family businesses passed from father to son or father to daughter. They are quite different as some make decorative items, jewellery and household items.
The concierge at the Verina Hotels can arrange pottery lessons in one of the 19 potteries depending on the interests of their guests! Usually it takes from one to three days. There are potteries situated near both the Verina Astra, Verina Suites and the Verina Villa.
