The arrival of autumn in Nikko / Kinugawa Onsen
just 2 hours away from Tokyo
Located about 2 hours from Tokyo along the Tobu Railway line is the Nikko / Kinugawa Onsen area - home to world heritage site, “Shrines and Temples of Nikko,” and famous as one of Kanto's leading hot spring resorts, respectively. The area will also see the arrival of the autumn season from late September to late November, painting the area with vivid orange, red, and yellow leaves.
Famous as one of the leading spots in Japan for enjoying the changing colours of autumn, Nikko's landscape becomes a canvas of vibrant colours as far as the eye can see. The autumnal leaves change colour according to their altitude, starting with those at the high mountain areas and ending with the foot of the mountain.
Visitors can enjoy a nice hike through the Odashirogahara Marshlands from late September to early October and the Nikko Toshogu Shrine world heritage site from early to late November. Located just beyond world heritage site, “Shrines and Temples of Nikko”, the latest ferry "Nantai” gives you a 360° panorama as well as a close-up view of the autumnal leaves on the Lake Chuzenji shore.
“Taiju,” the new steam locomotive from August 2017, runs on the 12.4 km stretch between the Niko and Kinugawa Onsen areas. Using old-fashioned steam for operation and running primarily on weekends and holidays, riding Taiju is a good way to lead into autumn.
