14 Jul 2014
Visiting families between 24 July and 31 August 2014 will be able to engage in a range of daily activities curated by visual artist and art educator Natalie Ryde (www.natalieryde.com). Using the ArcelorMittal Orbit as inspiration, kids of all ages will be shown how to use their imagination with a variety of methods including cutting out, drawing, painting and building, to create fantastic works of art - from sketches of the London skyline, mirror boxes, skyscraper hats, badges or their very own ArcelorMittal Orbit.
When not busy creating, there is still plenty to amaze and entertain. Families will love the innovative gigapixel screens, interactive digital technology which pinpoint and detail the history of key sights. Spot The Shard, Canary Wharf, Wembley Stadium and St Paul's as well as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its world-famous sporting venues. There's also Anish Kapoor's incredible mirrors which flip and twist the horizon as well as a soundscape of local London life - football at Upton Park, Whitechapel Bell Foundry and Columbia Road Flower Market – which can be heard as visitors descend to ground on the external spiral staircase.
At the base of the sculpture, EastTwenty Bar & Kitchen is the perfect pit stop before exploring the rest of the Park. Families will enjoy dancing water fountains, action packed adventure playgrounds, four themed walking trails, art installations, a tree-lined promenade, beautifully landscaped parklands (by same landscape architect as the High Line in New York) and tranquil waterways. A fantastic day out which will keep the kids entertained every step of the way!
Activities will take place from 2-4pm each day of the school summer holidays and will be included in the entry price. Booking in advance is advised to avoid dissapointment. The ArcelorMittal Orbit is open daily 10am – 6pm (last entry 5pm) and tickets cost £7 for children, £15 for adults, £40 for a family ticket (two adults/two children) and £12 for concessions. Notes to Editors
The ArcelorMittal Orbit originated in 2009 when London Mayor Boris Johnson launched a competition to design a sculpture for the Olympic Park. Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond's design of a continually looping red steel tower won the competition. Its construction was made possible by Lakshmi Mittal who provided sponsorship and all of the 2000 tonnes of steel used. Further funding was provided by the Mayor of London's office and the London Development Agency.
The viewing galleries are accessed by two high speed lifts. After leisurely taking in the views, visitors are encouraged to walk down the 455 steps which spiral around the central column so they fully experience the constantly changing perspectives from every angle. The ArcelorMittal Orbit has full wheelchair access. For more information visit www.arcelormittalorbit.com
* Concessions on production of suitable ID: Students – valid UK student card; 60+ – Freedom Pass/driving licence/passport; local residents – photo ID plus utility bill/bank statement confirming residency in Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest.
