The AOI Illustration Awards are the only independent jury-selected illustration competition in the UK and this competition’s winning work was chosen by a panel of esteemed judges from all aspects of the industry including commissioners, publishers and artists. From over 200 shortlisted entries, 15 category winners were chosen in round two judging held in May 2013. Judges then gathered to choose the overall New Talent and Professional winners before revealing at the Awards Ceremony in October.

Following its opening display last year at Somerset House, which attracted over 12,000 visitors, The AOI Illustration Awards tours across the UK visiting Guildford House Gallery, Guildford, 2 June – 19 July 2014. “We are absolutely delighted to be showing this prestigious and exciting exhibition at Guildford House, and look forward to enjoying it with many visitors ” said Lynn Szygenda, Exhibitions and Audience Development Officer for Guildford Heritage Services.

For the first time in the competition’s 37-year history, the shortlist includes illustrators outside the UK to recognise the exceptional work produced by illustrators internationally and promote illustration as an essential contributor to global visual culture. The exhibition features an extraordinary range of work from the UK to USA, and Australia to Israel, covering a wide breadth of practice, including advertising, books and editorial, to reflect the diverse disciplines within the industry.

The New Talent Award 2013 was jointly received by Mitch Miller for A Showman’s Yard in the East End and Jun Cen for Entrance/Exit.

The Professional Award 2013 was received by Jonathan Burton for Odd Bods.

The Association of Illustrators

The Association of Illustrators (AOI) is a non-profit trade association with a membership that includes freelance illustrators, agents, clients, students and colleges. Established in 1973, it is the leading body to represent illustrators in the UK and campaign for illustrators’ rights, continually working to increase the professional standing of illustrators, commercially and artistically. The AOI works to improve contract content and contracting practice extended to illustrators by commissioners. It publishes a quarterly magazine, ‘Varoom!’ and produces the annual ‘AOI Illustration Awards’ competition and touring exhibition, which celebrates the best in contemporary international illustration. The competition has been rebranded as the Illustration Awards following 36 successful years as Images.
