As part of its fifth anniversary celebrations, the Acropolis Museum has begun an ambitious programme to use digital technologies to recreate ancient sculptures and marbles with original detail and colour.
Following the anniversary on 20 June, it is now possible to see horse riders of the 'west frieze' with 3D digital images of copper weapons, bridles, and flowing blue capes scanned onto the ancient marble.
The work follows on from investigations into original features and now technological advancements allow visitors to see ancient sculptures and friezes as they are thought to have been when they were first created.
The 'new' Acropolis Museum situated by the southeastern slope of the Acropolis hill, on the ancient road that led up to the "sacred rock” in classic times, is just 280 meters from the Parthenon and is an archeological museum displaying findings and artifacts from the Acropolis site that date from the Greek Bronze Age, Roman and Byzantine eras.
This museum opened its doors in 2009 and since then has welcomed 6.5 million people. British visitors make up the largest proportion of foreign visitors – and over 170,000 Brits have gone through the turn-styles in the past five years.
Generally considered to be one of the best museums in the world nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited in an area of over 14,000 square metres.
Dimitrios Pandermalis of the President Acropolis Museum said: “In its first five years of life the Acropolis Museum has fulfilled our country's high expectations. New technologies are increasingly finding their place in the museum and now offer essential tools to aid the understanding of the great exhibits. We comfortably welcome 3,000 visitors a day and we are proud to have been recognized as being amongst the three best museums in the world.”
