When it comes to romantic destinations, none could be better than Cyprus. Aptly known as 'the island of love', Cyprus is the mythical birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite and where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria and crowned her queen of England. Here, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation shares its favourite nine things for couples (or singles!) to do on Valentine's Day – there's something for everyone.
For culture-lovers: Follow in Aphrodite's footsteps
As the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Cyprus boasts several fascinating locations where you can follow in the footsteps of Aphrodite herself. Visit 'Aphrodite's Rock' – the fabled birthplace of Aphrodite on the Pafos coast – where swimming around the rock at midnight is said to make the swimmer younger by a year for every lap before driving to Polis to the Baths of Aphrodite, a secluded pool where legend holds that the goddess is said to have seduced Adonis
For active couples: Bike rides with an ocean view
Cyprus' year-round sunshine and agreeable Mediterranean climate make it the perfect choice for a romantic bike ride. Cycle through the stunning mountains or along the coast until you find the perfect place to stop for a picnic. Whether you're looking for mountain bikes, road bikes or guided tours, Cyprus has it all
For wine connoisseurs: Wine tasting amid picturesque vineyard
What's more romantic than enjoying a glass of fine wine in the Mediterranean sunshine surrounded by breath-taking Cypriot landscapes? The highly-rated Fikardos Winery and family-run Vlassides Winery both offer tastings where you can sample some of the island's best wines (at Vlassides Winery the tastings take place in the family's home). Or, for real connoisseurs, you can organise a tour through one of Cyprus' seven scenic wine routes.
For some R&R: Indulge in a spectacular spa
Cyprus has a stunning selection of 5-star spa and wellness offerings – from The Myrianthousa Spa set in the tranquil Troodos mountains and The Retreat Spa within the luxurious Aphrodite Hills Hotel with its panoramic views across the glistening Mediterranean Sea to bespoke treatments at Oneiro Spa, special treatments with local ingredients at The AlmyraSpa and treatments fed by the mineral-rich sulphur water of the Saint Anastasia spring at The Ayii Anargyri Natural Healing Spa Resort.
For luxury-lovers: Indulge in five-star opulence
There's no better feeling than being able to totally spoil your loved one. Couples looking to splash out can relax in a private hot tub overlooking the Akamas Peninsular at the Anassa's Aphrodite suite and enjoy the hotel's signature Rose Petal Mojito cocktail, created by its head barman Takis Antoniou. Another hotel that is synonymous with exclusivity and exceptional service is Colombia Beach Resort, nestled in the beautiful Pissouri Bay; here, you can sip on an exotic cocktail while cooling off in the pool at the swim-up Cape Aspro Pool Bar
For quality time together: Enjoy total solitude with “Yurts in Cyprus”
For couples who want to enjoy some quality time together, the eco-friendly Yurts in Cyprus offers an escape with a difference. Set in the picturesque countryside close to Simou Village, the Yurts are a unique and peaceful alternative to hotel accommodation. The 2.5km Yurt area has been specifically designed to watch magical sunsets over the island and is the perfect place to get back to nature with your loved-one.
For golfers: Play a round together at Aphrodite Hills
Golfing has really taken off in Cyprus so it's a great destination for couples that love to play golf together. There are three 18-hole courses of international standard on the island, including the Aphrodite Hills Golf Resort a splendid 18-hole championship course spread over 6,289 meters, with a Golf Academy and a magnificent Clubhouse. The world-class golf course is currently undergoing a €2.5million investment and full modernisation, including the rebuilding of the greens and bunkers. The opening date has been brought forward and the newly upgraded course is now fully open. There are also great courses at Minthis Hills Golf Club, Tsada, Secret Valley Venus Rock and Elea Estate
For animal lovers: Go horse riding
Being on horseback is a wonderfully romantic way to see the stunning views of Cyprus' unspoilt rural villages, picturesque forest tracks and sea views. Ride in Cyprus, based in Lysos, has beautiful wooden stables and happy horses where you can choose from one-hour rides to seven-day riding holidays. What's more, if you opt for a two-hour sunset ride, you'll be treated to a Brandy Sour and nibbles at the viewpoint
For singles: Create your perfect trip!
You don't need to be in a couple to enjoy Cyprus. The island's legendary hospitality and friendly people make it a great holiday destination for those travelling solo. When you don't have to please anyone else, you can do exactly what you want to do – whether it be enjoying authentic cuisine at a Cypriot restaurant, visiting ancient monuments, trying windsurfing, scuba diving, yoga, hiking, biking, rock climbing or more!
