This May major names including Tony Hawkes, Robert Powell, Jonathan Dimbleby, Kate Humble, Fern Britton, Ken Livingstone and Monty Halls will headline at the spectacular 11-day Fowey Festival of Words & Music, home of Daphne du Maurier the acclaimed author who wrote such greats as Jamaica Inn, Rebecca, and Fisherman’s Creek.
As well as nationally and internationally known writers and TV presenters, the festival (08-18 May) will play host to a range of musicians including the string quartet group Bond, YolanDa Brown and band, Lau, and Graham Gouldman’s ‘Heart Full of Songs’.
Over 140 separate events will take place over the 11 days for the event including an exciting programme of talks, exhibitions, workshops, guided walks, river cruises and community activities attracting the great and the good from the world of literature, music and entertainment.
Fans of du Maurier can stay opposite the cottage where she wrote Hungry Hill, holidaying in Farthings, a 200 year old former pilchard store above Readymoney Cove.
This stunning four bedroom cottage for six is situated in a tiny hamlet with just seven other houses and sits above an enchanting sandy bay with its own swimming platform 20 metres off shore.
Inside, Farthings has a beautiful open plan living, dining and kitchen area on the first floor, which has double doors that open up onto a balcony overlooking the secluded beach below. A lovely wood burning stove keeps guest toasty and warm at night, and the flatscreen TV, DVD player and IPod sound system helps to entertain in the brief moments away from the beach. The bedrooms reflect the unique shape of this pretty cottage and even include a special children’s bedroom for one.
Outside, Farthings has a hot and cold outdoor shower, perfect for washing off sand, and an enclosed courtyard that acts as a sun trap.
Farthings has good access to the National Trust Coastal Path and to Fowey town centre.
A week over the Daphne du Maurier Festival can be booked from £1,039. Weeks are available from 4th and 11th May.
