Family travel during the holiday season with Hidden Iceland
More and more families are opting to use their long weekends during the holiday season to try something a little more exotic and get out of the country. With only a few extra days off though you can't go too far.
What if I told you Iceland isn't too far! With Northern Lights, ice caves, glaciers, Icelandic horses, volcanoes, scrumptious local food and geothermal hot pools you can squeeze in a lot in just a few days. Couple that with a passionate and friendly guide and you have a memory that will last a lifetime.
5 Reasons to come to Iceland during the holiday season
1. It's closer than you think!
A standard flight from New York is 5.5 hours. 4.5 hours from Boston. 3.5 hours from Paris and only 2.5 hours from Scotland and other parts of the UK. IF you only have 4 or 5 days then you can even squeeze in some Northern Lights spotting or Food tasting on the first and last day.
2. It's actually warmer than everywhere else at the same latitude (believe me).
The gulf stream sends up warm air and water all year round giving Iceland a temperate climate. The average temperature in January is 0.3C (33F). Far warmer than the Canadian Equivalent. So if you manage to stay dry in your winter clothes you'll be surprised how pleasant it can be wrapped up in a big blanket while hunting the northern lights at a secluded hotel in the middle of nowhere.
3. The welcome from the locals will be even warmer!
Our guides at Hidden Iceland are hand picked for 3 reasons: safety, experience and personality. We treat each customer like friends and family. Just like the locals. So when sharing that delicious tomato soup made with tomatoes grown in a geothermal greenhouse it'll be like sharing a meal with a trusted friend, and not a guide. This is shown from our reviews. Hidden Iceland are number 1 in the country for Private tours on TripAdvisor. The comfortable and secluded hotels we pick for searching out the northern lights often are family run that double up as a farm in the summer season.
4. Iceland is small enough to see the must see sights in one long weekend.
Hidden Iceland created a 3 day itinerary with the short break traveller in mind. This 3 day trip includes northern lights hunting, glacier hiking, ice cave discovery, sneaking behind waterfalls, local cuisine, hot pools and seal spotting at the glacier lagoon (and much more). For the younger and older generation some of the more active attractions can be amended to their needs.
5. Northern Lights, northern lights and did we say northern lights?
The trick on these short excursions to maximise your chances of seeing the northern lights is to combine the trip with secluded accommodation while on tour. Spend as little time in Reykjavik as you can. Our 3 day essential south Iceland tour combines secluded guest houses utilising their remote locations to spend the night hunting for the northern lights. Mum or Dad can stay up searching for them with the kids sleep soundly until something appears across the sky. Then the day pf adventure the following day can be achieved without sleepy faces.
