This summer, theater educators from all over the world will have the unique opportunity to learn, exchange ideas, and interact with Broadway professionals at New York University. For the fourth year in a row, Theatre Direct International and Music Theatre Internationals Broadway Teaching Lab is bringing theater educators and Broadway professionals together in the theater capital of the world for a three day intensive series of interactive workshops, seminars and observations.
The Broadway Teaching Lab will be hosted at New York Universitys Tisch Graduate School of Musical Theatre Writing from July 15-17, 2004. The program, which features observation by and interaction with Broadway professionals, is designed to inspire teachers and directors of high school theater with new teaching methods, enhanced production skills and an exchange of ideas with Broadway artists so that the educators can bring Broadway back to their communities and into their classrooms. Applications are available online at www.BroadwayClassroom.com.
Workshop topics include directing, conceptualizing and planning productions, teaching methodology, a practical guide to careers in theatre, the National Standards for Arts Education, and a conversation with musical theatre writers. Past guest teachers have included Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin), Joe Stein (Fiddler on the Roof, Zorba), Brad Oscar and Sam Harris (The Producers), Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party, Youre a Good Man, Charlie Brown), Jesse McKinley (NY Times On Stage and Off), Michael Mayer (Sideman, Thoroughly Modern Millie), and David Auburn (Proof, Tick Tick Boom). This year, the program includes tickets and cast talk backs to four shows including the new production of Wicked. The cost for the three-day workshop, including theatre tickets and a special round table dinner at the Planet Hollywood is $499. For an additional fee, teachers can earn graduate-level credits through the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Theatre Directs Broadway Classroom, Broadways leading education program, is the creator and sponsor of the Broadway Teaching Lab, along with Music Theatre International. Broadway Classroom, sponsored in part by Planet Hollywood, is a cooperative effort of twelve Broadway shows (Aida, Beauty and the Beast, Bombay Dreams, Chicago, Fame, 42nd Street, Mamma Mia!, Movin Out, Rent, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked) to create an educational component for a Broadway class trip. Broadway Classroom offers eight different customized workshops for groups attending Broadway shows, taught by qualified teaching artists and Broadway cast and creative team members.
