The Magdalen Chapter in Devon will be hosting a series of evenings pairing food and wine from around the world.
The three event series will see the likes of former Riverford chef Jane Baxter and Italian expert Christine Smallwood join forces to explore global taste sensations.
The evenings are set to take place on Thursday 30 January, Thursday 27 February and Thursday 27 March.
Hotel Head Chef Ben Bulger will take to the stage alongside independent wine and food experts to discuss and deliver menus inspired by global travel. Each evening will explore taste destinations including New Zealand, Thailand, Italy and Spain.
General Manager Fiona Moores said: “Our food and wine evenings developed a fabulous following in 2013. For this year's calendar, we are delighted to be bringing the tastes of far and wide to the hotel. Each evening is set to be a great event with an abundance of fresh, exciting flavours inspired by global travel.”
The first of three evenings, ‘Drink in New Zealand and dine in Thailand’, will take place on Thursday 30 January. Guests will be able to enjoy wine from New Zealand accompanied by a three course Thai supper. Tony Cloke of the award-winning Spy Valley winery will take diners through a selection of the finest wines from the Marlborough region of New Zealand.
The accompanying menu will feature authentic Thai dishes including ‘gung foi tort’ (prawn cakes), ‘gai tot’ (fried chicken with lemon grass), ‘geng som plaa’ (orange fish curry), ‘neua pat bai grapao’ (beef with chillies and holy basil) plus many others.
The second of three evenings, ‘One Night Only…Tastes of Puglia’ will be hosted by top chefs Christine Smallwood & Jane Baxter who will explore tastes and tales from their travels. The evening will take place on Thursday 27 February. Christine will talk through her passion for Puglia in conversation with Jane Baxter. Jane Baxter is best known for her collaborative cookery books including Riverford and Leon. Christine Smallwood is the author behind top titles ‘An Appetite for Umbria’ and ‘An Appetite for Puglia’.
Guests will enjoy a menu of true Italian dishes matched with accompanying wines. It will feature an antipasti of Fave puree with chard and roasted peppers, an aubergine Parmigianniand salt cod with French beans, tomato and chilli.
The third evening, ‘Spring in Spain’, will take place on Thursday 27 March. It will explore the cultures of wine making in Spain, France and Italy. Stanley Park of Milton Sandford Wines will guide guests through a selection of European wines to accompany the delicious menu of Spanish tapas.
The menu will feature authentic Mediterranean tapas dishes including Serrano ham, salt cod, orange and black olive salad, Mussel clams, sherry and garlic, Chorizo chick peas and tomato plus wood pigeon, Morcilla and lentils.
Places are priced at £30 per person per event for ‘Drink in New Zealand and dine in Thailand’ and ‘Spring in Spain’ and £45 per person for ‘One Night Only…Tastes of Puglia’.
Each event will include a three-course supper plus accompanying wines. Overnight packages are available from £199 and include two tickets to the event.
