Tapping into the Tweed

The Tweed Tourism Co.

It may be seen as the quieter alternative to the glitzy Gold Coast, but there's plenty of action to be found at Tweed Heads on the Queensland/NSW border.

For the local surfers, the action centres on the Snapper Superbank and DuranbahBeach – two of the best surfing spots on Australia's East Coast and the breeding ground of world champions like Mick Fanning and Steph Gilmore.

Separating the two pointbreaks, Point Danger is the perfect place to see the wave masters at work or look for the dolphins and whales that regularly put on their own shows.

At Café D'Bah, opposite the Point Danger Lighthouse and Captain Cook Memorial, you can dolphin-watch without having to leave your latte, using the binoculars provided on the streetfront dining benches.

Driving right down the State border along Boundary Street, there's action of a very different kind at the award-winning clubs lining Wharf Street and on to South Tweed.

Live music, international stage shows, variety shows, free movies and much more is on offer at places like TwinTowns, Club Banora, the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club, Seagulls, Tweed Heads Bowls Club and the Ivory Tavern.

When it's time to relax, however, Tweed Heads really comes into its own when you shift your attention to the network of tranquil waterways and estuaries.

From the Tweed Marina in River Terrace and BirdsBay in West Tweed, river cruises depart daily, giving you the chance to rediscover the simple pleasures of pumping for yabbies, hauling in the crabpots and dangling a fishing line in the water.

Houseboat holidays on the TweedRiver are one of the Gold Coast's best kept secrets, where you can putter around deserted river beaches and wetlands alive with birdlife without having to negotiate the crowded waterways found further north.

Tweed Marina is also the casting off point for the Coast's best deep sea fishing adventures with a fleet of charter boats to take you out to the offshore reefs in search of billfish, tuna, mahi mahi and snapper.

And if that all sounds too much like hard work, just call into one of the seafood wholesalers on the riverbank where you can design your own fresh seafood banquet for a picnic at one of the many river and beachside parks.

Accommodation in Tweed Heads offers something to suit every budget, from luxury apartments and hotels through to family-style motels and holiday/camping parks, so why not plan to spend a few days re-discovering your own backyard?
