Australia's first naval battle between HMAS Sydney and SMS Emden occurred in the waters surrounding the Cocos Keeling Islands on the 9th November 1914. Planning has begun and 2014 will witness Sydney Emden 100, commemorating the centenary of 'The Battle of Cocos'.
Aside from being a significant event in Australian Naval history, the centenary will reveal the histories of the unparalleled capture, sinking and boarding of some 30 vessels in 3 months sailing by the SMS Emden. The unprecedented gentlemanly action of the SMS Emden's Captain Muller towards all those on board the intercepted vessels and the story of a shore raiding party under command of Helmut von Mucke left stranded, that made an epic return to Germany, first by a commandeered sailing vessel, the Ayesha, capped by an overland return to Germany to a tumultuous welcome.
Fact Not Fiction Films, an independent UK film company is set to release 'SMS Emden HMAS Sydney Anniversary Documentary' in 2013 after filming took place on North Keeling Island and the still visible underwater wreck of the SMS Emden. The 52 minute documentary will be distributed to Broadcasters, DVD and Pay TV internationally.
Events and schedules surrounding the Sydney Emden 100 commemoration will be announced as they are confirmed. The event will have a dedicated website at www.sydneyemden100.com.au and Facebook site for those interested in learning more about this major milestone and keeping up to date with planned events.
