Sunny Kids Sun Safety

For all those children who spend the day at day care inside more than out, skin is going to be tender in the summer sunlight. Lightweight long sleeves and pants will shade limbs. A hat can shade neck and face. Kids have to be trained from very young to accept wearing a hat.

Sunscreen is to be applied more than once during a day's outing. Sunscreen loses effectiveness during the day with time. Also activity causing sweat or playing in water diminishes effectiveness. If the SPF is 30, figure it will last 30 minutes. By all means, avoid the eyes when applying sunscreen to the faces of children, especially the forehead. As a child sweats the sunscreen will sting eyes as it is swept by gravity off of the forehead downward. Sunglasses are ideal. Again children have to be taught to wear sunglasses too.

Children have to sip water frequently to help stave dehydration. What amount of water is to be drunk? Take a person's body weight, cut it in half, that figure in ounces is appropriate. When exercising, even more fluids could be required. Moisture from melon, oranges, and grapes is beneficial. Plus, good nutrition helps to provide electrolytes for a healthy balance of minerals and prevents muscle cramping and/or fatigue. Hydrate today for tomorrow. Eat today for tomorrow.  Nuts, leafy green vegetables, celery, tomatoes, olives, calcium, and a hint of sodium are ideal.
