A third of Brits (31%) munch through at least one sandwich every day, crowning it the nations most popular choice of snack but were still a nation of traditionalists when it comes to our fillings, new research reveals today.
The Great British Sandwich Study was carried out by leading low fares airline, Flybe, to mark the launch of its new range of luxury on-board sandwiches, created by celebrity chef and restaurateur, Brian Turner, star of Ready Steady Cook and Great Food Live.
The study reveals that in spite of a wealth of new sandwich flavours, Brits still have a definite taste for the traditional; with the nations top three favourite fillings all being well loved British classics:
1. Roast Beef (20%) 2. Tuna and Sweetcorn (16%) 3. BLT and Cheese and Pickle claimed joint third place (12%)
Cordon Bleu Butties In fact simple British classic Cheese and Pickle polled four times as many votes in Flybes Great Sandwich Study as Mediterranean influenced Roasted Vegetables (3%) and six times as many votes as new flavour on the block, Crayfish and Rocket which proved the least popular choice. Only 2% of the population opted for it as their favourite filling.
Bored, on-board Flybes research also found that in spite of their love of food and sandwiches in particular, the majority of Brits are indifferent about airline food with over a third (39%) admitting they find the usual on-board fare plain boring. Flybes new selection of tasty, traditional sandwiches, for their Deli in the Sky in-flight menu has been developed to tantalise Britons traditional taste buds and challenge perceptions of airline food, particularly on low cost flights. Flybe continues to pioneer the low cost sector by becoming the first airline to offer a celebrity endorsed product onboard. Reflecting the nations love of British classics, Flybes new on-board sandwich selection has been created by one of the great ambassadors of traditional cooking, celebrity chef, Brian Turner.
Brian Turner comments: "Why do airlines try to do things that just dont work in the sky when a simple sandwich is perfection? Just take great produce and serve as fresh as possible. With the nations favourite sandwich filling being traditional, simple classics, there was no better chef than Brian Turner, with his no-nonsense philosophy to food., says Raymond Kiersey, Retail Sales General Manager, Flybe. Our new range of in-flight sandwiches, created by one of Britains top chefs, is another example of our ongoing commitment to provide a first class service at low fares for travellers across the UK.
The latest enhancement to Flybes Deli in the Sky menu is yet a further testament to Flybes commitment to offering customers even more value on their low fares flights, setting them apart from their low fares competitors. Other benefits include pre-assigned seating, offering more leg room than any other low fares airline, business lounge access and a frequent flyer programme.
