Sundance Film Festival, now in its 41st year, kicks off once more in Park City on January 24th with a programme including 112 feature length films from 33 countries. This final selection has been whittled down from more than 14,000 entries – a Sundance record. British interest is perhaps led by 'Official Secrets' which will have its world premiere during the festival. This is the story of British intelligence whistleblower Katharine Gun, played by Keira Knightley. Gun leaked a top-secret NSA memo before the 2003 Iraq invasion that showed officials proposing the blackmail of other states to vote for war.
A tip for skiers thinking of visiting Park City during Sundance; while the hotels and restaurants are full to capacity with filmmakers, directors, producers, actors and journalists, the ski slopes could be described as unusually quiet.
Away from the silver screen, Park City will host the 2019 FIS World Championships for Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeskiing from February 1st-10th, when 1300 athletes from 36 countries will compete in 25 medal competitions. Free to all spectators, the thrilling action will take place – day and night – on the slopes of Deer Valley, Park City Mountain and Canyons Village. Snow conditions couldn't be better for competitors and visiting skiers alike and snowboarders. Park City has been dumped on with Utah's famous dry powder snow all season long. At the time of writing almost 70 cm has fallen in the past few days.
