Maybe it's because school's back in session or the Ohio State Buckeyes have already played their first game, but the collective notion is that Labor Day signals the end of summer. While one could certainly conceive that a Pumpkin Spice Latte would put a smile on anyone's face, it's a calendar fact that summer doesn't actually end until September 22. So don't put away those flip flops quite yet, because the forecast looks warm and there's plenty left to do over at sunny Put-in-Bay. Below is a quick highlight of the jam packed historical weekend schedule.
What is Historical Weekend? Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and his brave men fought valiantly and lucky for us, victoriously during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. The entire weekend of September 5-7 pays homage to their brilliant victory and is chock full of historical and entertaining events which include:
Friday, September 5
- Boy Scout Camporee - Over 1,200 scouts camp on the Perry Monument Grounds.
- Sunset Flag Retirement Ceremony - Pay homage to our nations flag, the Union Jack, and the Maple Leaf as they are ceremoniously retired at 7:30 pm at Perry's Monument.
Saturday, September 6
- Wreath Laying at Battle Site - 9:15 am. If you would like to join in the Wreath Laying Ceremony aboard Miller Ferry, tickets are free but must be reserved through the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce at visitputinbay.com.
- Art in the Park - from 10 am - 5 pm at DeRivera Park.
- War of 1812 Family Dance Workshop - Dance instruction and Music by Fiddlesix. 11 am - 1pm at Perry's Monument.
- Open Houses: OSU Stone Lab/Gibraltar Island/Aquatic Center (11 am - 4 pm), South Bass Island Lighthouse (11 am - 4 pm), Open House Lake Erie Islands Wildlife Center.
- Grand Parade - Local and regional dignitaries join the Boy Scouts, classic cars, high school marching bands, the captain of the USS Lake Erie, area veterans, and 1812 re-enactors for the annual parade, 2:15 pm.
- Military Tactical - Combined artillery and special maneuvers of ground forces from War of 1812, Perry's Monument at 3 pm.
- Retracing History: A 1812 Conversation - Roundtable discussion about the War of 1812 and the Present Day US Navy, Perry's Monument at 4 pm.
- Toledo Symphony performance at Perry's Monument at 6 pm. ~ Last Miller Ferry departs Put-in-Bay at 8 pm.
- Lights of Peace at Put-in-Bay - Harbor Illumination that will take place at dusk, as the Symphony performance concludes.
Sunday, September 7
- Ecumenical Worship Service by St. Paul's Episcopal Church - Perry's Monument, 9 am.
- Procession: In Remembrance of the Fallen - Procession begins near flag poles ends in the Memorial Rotunda. 90 – 100 volunteers to carry national flags from around the world needed. Participants must arrive by 9:45 a.m. to line up.
- Muffins vs Mossbacks - Join the Ohio Muffins as they play the Put-in-Bay Mossbacks in an old fashioned time honored tradition of playing a historical game of baseball at the school diamond, time 2 pm
