When the temperature climbs to balmy heights, Northumbrians make the most of the breath-taking landscape surrounding them through a series of music festivals. With an offering as diverse as the county, each festival has something unique to experience.
Classical music is a natural fit in the many grand houses, halls and castles of Northumberland – the last 'hidden gem' of England. The Brinkburn Music Festival in the first weekend of July makes the best of the fantastic acoustics of this 12th century priory with world class music to this rural corner of Northumberland. Highlights from last year included performances from The Queen's Six and the Royal Northern Sinfonia.
The 10th anniversary of Music at Paxton Festival is a celebration of international chamber music with a wide variety of ensemble and repertoire performances. These world-class concerts take place in the Picture Gallery in Paxton House on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. With its large, domed roof-light that lets in the summer sun and walls hung high with paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland's collection, it is an idyllic setting for chamber music. Audiences can take in more of the 18th century neo-Palladian mansion with afternoon tea, an early-evening supper, a stroll and a picnic in the grounds or a pre-concert drink in the courtyard. House tours, boat trips along the Tweed and net fishing can also be arranged.
For the festival with the grandest backdrop, look no further than the B Festival at the breath-taking Bamburgh Castle. As the sun sets on the end of July, the grounds of this ancient seat of Northumbrian kings transform into an arena for a feast of music from classical to pop, folk to jazz and beyond. Festival-goers are invited to bring their own picnics, fizz and blankets, and wear what they dare - from black tie to wellies, all are welcome!
Northumberland's largest musical event is the Alnwick International Music Festival. Every year in early August, Alnwick is filled with the sounds and sights of the music from around the globe. This year is a particularly special milestone, as they celebrate their fortieth anniversary. Eight days of passionate folk dancing, music and colourful costumes in the historic surroundings of Alnwick market town - a unique cultural experience!
