Architectural masterpiece Morpheus opens its doors
The world's first ever free-form exoskeleton high-rise architectural structure and five-star hotel, Morpheus, officially opened in Macao last month. Morpheus was by designed by legendary architect, the late Dame Zaha Hadid, while its interior is the handiwork of the globally-renowned designer Peter Remedios. With a total of 772 guest rooms, suites and villas, an executive lounge, Sky Pool situated 130 metres above ground, the world's most fashion-forward brands and retail options, an in-house Spa Butler concept, as well as VIP villas on the top floors, Morpheus offers guests a world-class experience.
Dining options at Morpheus include the Alain Ducasse at Morpheus, as well as Voyages, the legendary French chef's restaurant which is inspired by his travels. While the king of modern patisserie, Pierre Hermé, has created a new sleek lounge serving the finest delicacies and finally, Yi serves omakase menus made up of regional Chinese cuisines. The hotel also features contemporary art from high profile artists KAWS, Jean-Michel Othoniel and Thilo Heinzmann.
Other new hotel developments due for completion in 2018 include:
- The 13 – This “ultra luxury” property will feature 200 exclusive villas, 24-hour butler service, six restaurants and complimentary transfers via the property's fleet of 30 bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantoms. the13.com

Cathay Pacific launches new non-stop flight from Dublin to Hong Kong
Last month, Cathay Pacific launched a new non-stop service between Dublin and Hong Kong, which is the first ever direct route from Dublin Airport to the Asia-Pacific region. The new service operates on a four-times-weekly basis, departing Dublin every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, arriving in Hong Kong at 07:00 hours the next day.
Rooftop Dining in Taipa Village
Taipa Village is a culturally-rich traditional area of Macao, which is known for its extensive range of delicious dining experiences. With a number of its distinctive restaurants boasting open air rooftop dining, visitors can enjoy mouth-watering cuisine and stunning views of Taipa Village.
Restaurants with rooftop terraces include the innovative Portuguese Tapas restaurant Tapas de Portugal, traditional Macanese restaurant La Famiglia, down to earth Portuguese restaurant Portugalia and the modern Italian restaurant Bella Taipa. Explore Taipa Village with new interactive walking routes
To help visitors easily navigate and discover its local food, culture, shopping and sightseeing experiences on foot, Taipa Village has launched four new interactive walking routes, all of which can be found on its website.
The new walking routes are all designed to highlight the different offerings that can be found in Taipa Village:
- “The Gastronomy Experience”, which is ideal for foodies, as it consists of a generous selection of local and international cuisines to suit every budget, from local signature bites to refined dining venues with impeccable rooftop views
- “The Cultural Heritage Experience”, which retraces Taipa Village's historical and cultural relics, from the Lady of Carmo Church, to the Tin Hau Temple
- “The Lifestyle Experience”, which is a leisurely route designed to discover Taipa Village's quaint alleys, narrow walking paths, vivid colonial facades and multi-storey Portuguese houses
- “The Tastes of Life Experience”, which is all about discovering local flavours, from the local bakery shops to its street food offering, as well as its sumptuous coffee and dessert shops
Marc Chagall exhibition brings modernist art to Macao
A new exhibition called “Marc Chagall, Light and Colour in Southern France” has been unveiled in the Macao Museum of Art (MAM). The exhibition features over 100 works by modernist painter Marc Chagall created between the 1950s and the 1970s, including paintings, gouaches, lithographs, costumes and tapestries, showing the artist's extraordinary creative abilities in using different means of expression. Bringing for the first time to Macao the works of one of the greatest French artists of the 20th century, the exhibition is free to enter and will be open until 26 August 2018. - International Youth Dance Festival 2018, 21 – 26 July
From 21 – 26 July, the International Youth Dance Festival 2018 is back and will bring together young lovers of dance in Macao. Aged between 15 and 29, dancers from nearly 20 countries and regions, as well as participants from 10 local teams will perform, with this year's highlight being a show-stopping late-afternoon Parade on 21 July whose route will take in the incredible sights of the Ruins of St. Paul's and Senado Square.
- 2018 Wushu Masters Challenge, 2-5 August
The 2018 Wushu Masters Challenge, which is being held over four days from 2 August, gathers the world's greatest Wushu masters to compete against each other in a series of splendid and exciting events, featuring the three main Wushu elements of Lion Dance, Taolu and Sanda. Wushu exemplifies the long history of traditional martial arts in Chinese culture and the participation of residents and tourists is encouraged.

- The Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, 1, 8, 15, 24 September and 1 October
The annual Macao International Fireworks Display Contest takes place on several Saturdays every September, on Mid-Autumn Festival and on China's National Day on 1 October. Over the years, more than 100 international teams from China, the Philippines, Thailand, Chinese Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Australia, the UK, Switzerland, France, Germany, Portugal and Spain have participated in this world-class pyrotechnic shoot-out. Many visitors choose this time of year to come to Macao to enjoy an exotic holiday illuminated by spectacular displays in the night sky that can be enjoyed from many vantage points on the Macao Peninsula and Taipa Island.
- Mid-Autumn Festival, 24 September
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar. Festive vibes permeate the town where main streets are decorated with colourful lanterns to welcome the Festival. As one of the most-celebrated festivities in Chinese culture, the Mid-Autumn Festival symbolises a time for family reunion. Locals enjoy eating mooncakes and offer this sweet pastry as a gift to relatives and friends as a tradition for this occasion.
