Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel: Luxury and Innovation

The symbolic Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel, a luxury hotel at the foot of Machu Picchu, now features a new innovative interior design reminiscent of the fascinating Andean past of Peruvian culture.

For inspiration, Italian-Peruvian designers, Carmine Furgione and Sandra Chavez Olivieri drew upon Chakana, an Andean cross symbolizing the four elements of nature: fire, water, earth and air. Displayed through warm textures and materials made with traditional techniques, the elements invite guests to experience local culture from arrival to checkout.

Guests are greeted at the main entrance by a shiny wood veneer panel with 520 gold-plated medallions, a one-of-a-kind piece that is reminiscent of Peru's valuable and unforgotten history. With the Chakana element of fire in mind, the entire first floor is lit up in gold and bronze wall decorations, tables, and accessories such as Inca masks and Keros, an ancient Incan drinking vessel.

Rising in the center of the lobby is a flower-lined staircase, which leads guests to the next Chakana element, earth. Keeping with the earth theme, the second floor walls are lined with handmade modern Andean art comprised of wood and lambs wool dyed in natural colors, which are all displayed in warm lighting. Furniture consists of earthy colors; brown leather seats and marble and wooden tables decorated with burgundy and mustard-yellow caminos.

The updated Qunuq Restaurant is decorated with wood and ceramic pieces that exhibit the traditions and style of Inca history. With more than 300 pieces crafted by local artisans from Pisac, the restaurant also displays beautiful crystal jars filled with typical Andean ingredients such as corn, quinoa, chickpeas, beans and more.

Tying in the two elements of earth and fire, the guestrooms feature wood accents, gold Chakana-shaped embellishments and warm lighting, creating a pleasant sensation in a modern-Andean style.

The construction and implementation of the third and fourth floor of the hotel will continue with the same modern-Andean concept in the months to come.
