Do you love wine? Enjoy gourmet dining? Fancy driving a posh car for a day? Stuttgart is perfect for short breaks. Just a hop away on direct flights from the UK, the capital of the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg has glamorous palaces and half-timbered houses, elegant parks and a car-free city centre. More unexpected are vineyards within the city limits and Michelin-starred restaurants. Not forgetting world-class opera and ballet, art and music, plus tempting shopping along the Königstrasse. A city of vineyards
How many cities can boast of having vineyards within their city limits? Look up to the hills surrounding Stuttgart and you can see terraced rows of vines. Since the Romans arrived in the 3rd century, Stuttgarters have grown grapes. Today, they make award-winning wines, especially the easy-drinking, light, red Trollinger, the local speciality, always served chilled. The city even owns 43 acres of vines! Fun for visitors is the easy Stuttgart Wine Trail, a well-signposted circular walk through the vineyards.

Eat, drink and be merry!
For wine lovers, an annual highlight is the Stuttgart Wine Festival (28th August to 8th September 2019), held in the city centre. Filling the Market Square, Schillerplatz and Kirchstrasse are 125 beautifully-decorated stalls, where you can taste some 500 local wines from the surrounding Württemberg and Baden vineyards. Chat to the wine makers; eat local Swabian dishes, such as Käsepätzle (noodles with cheese) and Maultaschen (like ravioli). One stall is devoted to the Stuttgarter Jungwinzer, up-and-coming young winemakers.

Award-winning restaurants; traditional taverns
Where there is good wine, there is always good food. No wonder Stuttgart has 10 Michelin-starred restaurants. Find wood-panelled atmosphere at “Zirbelstube” and the “Zauberlehrling”; go for hip and modern at “5”. And the world's only airport with a Michelin-starred restaurant is Stuttgart's international airport, with the stylish “top air”. Totally local are Besenwirtschaften; these pop-up taverns serve wines from the owner's vineyards. Spot them by the Besen (broom) on the door. That means: “We're open. Come on in!”

Calling all petrol heads!
Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are synonymous with Stuttgart and have world-class museums in the city. The stylish Mercedes-Benz Museum explores the social history of the car, patented back in 1886. Celebrating its 10th birthday, the cool Porsche Museum is all about boy's toys.
