STORY IDEA: Lincoln's Legacy in Springfield

Illinois Office of Tourism

Springfield, located 200 miles (124 kilometers) from Chicago was home for 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It was there he made a home for his family, a living as a lawyer, and a name for himself as a progressive mind.

Coinciding with President Lincoln's death, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) is highlighting its 10th anniversary in 2015 with new exhibits and theatrical pieces like Undying Words, which explores Lincoln's speeches and The Battle Hymn Story, which dissects the origins of a Civil War hymnal “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

In addition to the ALPLM, there are many other ways to experience Lincoln's legacy in Illinois, including:

  • The Lincoln Home National Historic Site
  • The Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site
  • The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices
  • The Old State Capitol
