Spooky Half Term Hauntings, Ponies And Pigs, Walking Festivals And Lots More On An Autumn Break With New Forest Cottages

New Forest Cottages

Autumn is a magical time to visit the New Forest.  The Forest comes alive with the red and gold of the changing leaves, the historic pubs light their log fires, and from mid-September pigs are let out for 'pannage' an ancient custom where pigs are let loose in the forest to eat the fallen acorns which are poisonous to the New Forest ponies.  There is a lot to do this season for holidaymakers, and New Forest Cottages www.newforestcottages.co.uk have some outstanding properties in the heart of the Forest, perfect for autumn breaks.

Walking is a great way to experience the natural beauty of  the New Forest and this autumn the National Park Authority are launching the' New Forest Walking Festival' including guided Wildlife Walks, History Hikes and Food Trails with expert guides and for all abilities (18th October – 2 November).  Mountain biking is also very popular with bike hire available at several locations throughout the forest and 100miles of approved cycle routes; and horse riding is also available for experienced riders and beginners alike.

During October Half Term kids will be kept well entertained with a number of events throughout the Forest including a Halloween trail at Beaulieu House, supposedly one of Britain's most haunted places, followed by face painting and spooky stories from the costumed guides (25th Oct – 2nd Nov).  There is also a ghoulish ghost train from Exbury, pumpkin carving at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst and lots to do at Peppa Pig World for younger children.

An ideal hideaway for couples, Megs is a tastefully furnished, single storey cottage near Brockenhurst with direct forest access for keen walkers or cyclists.  Once a stable, Megs is now a comfortable, relaxing place to unwind with 2 good local pubs and within 5 miles of both the Georgian town of Lymington and Beaulieu House. Sleeps 2 adults and 1 baby.  From £304 for a 3 night break this autumn http://www.newforestcottages.co.uk/cottage-details/A170

Little Hearnden, near Fordingbridge is an excellent base for families wanting to explore the National Park.  This charming, well equipped thatched cottage enjoys a tranquil rural setting with views across farmland to the Forest beyond.  The Royal Oak Pub, once a Royal Hunting Lodge is a short walk away and you can walk from the cottage along country lanes into open forest.    Sleeps 6.  From £532 for a 3 night short break this autumn http://www.newforestcottages.co.uk/cottage-details/A816
