Hiking and horseback in SouthWest Germany
With its outstanding trail system, SouthWest Germany is a popular hiking and walking destination. In the Black Forest, the century-old Westweg (West Way) was the world's first marked recreational trail. Hike the 650-feet deep, ten mile long Wutach Gorge, nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Black Forest". Or, saddle up and ride the clearly-marked network of trails to charming old villages, with atmospheric pubs and cozy restaurants.
SouthWest Germany's world-class summer cultural festivals
This summer, the Heidelberg Castle Festival celebrates its 40th birthday with a series of operas and concerts. “My Fair Lady” and “Robin Hood” are among the highlights. At the Ludwigsburg Schloss Festival near Stuttgart, major international stars include Britain's Bryn Terfel (till July 30th). East of Karlsruhe, Maulbronn Monastery , a UNESCO world heritage site, hosts some 25 concerts in the monastic church, the refectory and the cloister garden.
Taste - and drink! - award-winning wines
As Germany's sunniest region, SouthWest Germany boasts glorious vineyards and award-winning wines. The centuries-old winemaking traditions are celebrated at wine festivals. With “Germany's most beautiful wine village,” Stuttgart's 12-day wine and food festival (August 27th to September 7th) features dozens of beautifully-decorated stalls, showing off more than 250 local wines. Talk to the makers, eat regional dishes such as Zwiebelkuchen, a delicious onion tart. In the medieval city of Freiburg, the wine festival (July 3rd to 8th) shows off some 400 different wines.
