Jamie Coleman, head chef at the four-star Saunton Sands Hotel in North Devon, has been named South West Chef of the Year for 2016.

Competitors were required to create a three-course menu made up of loin of venison, whole brill and other ingredients from a mystery basket. The menus were then judged by a prestigious panel of 12 judges including Michael Caines MBE and Michael Wignall.

Jamie's career has included working for Gordon Ramsay at his Michelin starred restaurant in Claridge's in London and Michael Caines at double Michelin starred Gidleigh Park in Devon. He has worked at Saunton Sands Hotel since 2015 – achieving an AA Rosette for the hotel for his contemporary approach to creating menus using local seasonal produce.

'My approach to food has always been to make the most of seasonal produce, giving it the respect it deserves,” said Jamie. “North Devon is a beautiful part of the world and Saunton Sands is an exceptional hotel in a fabulous position. Our food reflects and celebrates that in terms of quality, seasonality and taste.

“I'm overwhelmed by this honour – particularly as it has been given to me by people in the industry for whom I have enormous respect.”

Saunton Sands is part of the Brend collection of hotels, current holders of the 'AA Hotel Group of the Year' title.

'We couldn't be more proud of Jamie,” said Director Peter Brend.  “He is genuinely passionate about cooking and, with his skill and creativity, thoroughly deserves this award.'
