Something's Fishy About the Success of the Eyre Peninsula Seafood and Aquaculture Trail

South Australian Tourism Commission

Tourism Eyre Peninsula in South Australia has released the third edition of its popular Seafood and Aquaculture Trail brochure.

This truly unique experience, believed to be the only one of its type in Australia, was originally established in November 2001 and visitors increasingly come to the Eyre Peninsula to experience the self-drive trail and enjoy the seafood experience.

On the trail you can observe Southern Bluefin Tuna that can be worth up to $5000 a fish, taste a Coffin Bay oyster taken directly from the lease and even visit a Seahorse farm.

A new component of the Seafood and Aquaculture Trail brochure is an eating out section featuring caf, hotels and restaurants that specialise in preparing and serving the fresh, local, seasonal seafood.

Industries and tours included in the trail vary from multi million dollar operations to small experimental breeding programs and family run businesses. There are fourteen tours available stretching from Whyalla to Ceduna.

The seafood industry is a key economic factor for Eyre Peninsula as it produces over 65% of the States seafood. In 2004/05 the aquaculture industry on Eyre Peninsula recorded sales of $300 million.

Throughout the year, the region also hosts a number of festivals and events celebrating the importance of the industry including the Tunarama Festival held in Port Lincoln each January, the Cuttlefish Dive Weekend in Whyalla each May and Oysterfest in Ceduna every October.
