Sometimes the most natural things in this world don�t come naturally; such is the case for children born with cleft lips and palates. The condition, although treatable, tremendously affects over 4,000 newborn Filipinos every year. But with cases of facial deformities prevalent in locations where access to treatment and surgery is few and far between, these children sometimes face the risk of growing up with the defect and thus developing social and self-esteem problems. What Operation Smile has done for these children is a message that rings true for Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila�s vision of not only being a purveyor of luxury, but a principal leader of hope and social responsibility.

Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila has been an advocate of Operation Smile for 3 consecutive years, during which time the hotel has been able to give more than 113 kids the smiles they deserve. This year, the hotel staff led by Sofitel�s Social and Welfare Committee organized a bazaar at the ACCOR corner where Sofitel employees put up personal possessions for sale to raise funds for children who suffer from cleft lips and palates. With the community�s strong turnout, Sofitel was able to raise enough proceeds to allow 38 less fortunate children to undergo life-changing surgeries. What�s more is that Sofitel hosted the patients during the screening period in addition to providing meals for them throughout the day.

Guests are also invited to take a cue from their short-term abode. A small donation of $1 per room night accounts for the $280 operation that puts smiles upon these children�s faces, an effort that helps to bring back their confidence and self-esteem, and turn their life dreams into reality. No matter how modest or insignificant it may appear, every little bit of contribution gives hope to children who are in need of human kindness and support.
