TERRACE, BRITISH COLUMBIA – The concept of ‘down’ days, once widespread at heli-ski lodges (broomball, anyone?), is so yesterday at Northern Escape Heli-Skiing in Terrace, British Columbia. Wanting to maximise guests’ enjoyment of the spectacular alpine, and provide a seven-days-a-week heli-ski experience, CEO John Forrest pulled his fleet of snowcats into action. Now, when it’s snowing too hard to fly safely, guests switch from helicopter to snowcat without skipping a beat to capitalize on their powder time.
Northern Escape, located in British Columbia’s Skeena Mountains, has a snowcat terrain large enough to stand alone as a full skiing area in its own right: 2,800 hectares (7,000 acres) with over 40 kilometres of roads. John Forrest adds: “Our guests love that we are not limited to ‘home runs’ when the weather turns difficult. Instead, the snowcats take them to endless glades and open tree skiing, where they can easily ski 15,000 vertical feet in a day.”
Forrest says: “With a seamless transition from helicopter to snowcat, there were zero down days last season. When you combine our snowcat back up with our Unlimited Vertical option, our guests are skiing more than 140,000 vertical feet in a week. And that exceeds most people’s expectations.”
Northern Escape Heli-Skiing has a total of 7,000 square kilometres (2,700 square miles) of terrain (an area the size of the Swiss Alps), and over 300 heli-ski runs, giving skiers and boarders endless terrain choices to explore. From immense glaciers to picture-perfect bowls, the Skeena Mountains are blessed with steep descents and deep snow pack, an ideal combination for heli-skiing.
Rates for a three-day package at Northern Escape Heli-Skiing begin at $3,549 CAD and the Unlimited Vertical Option starts at $835 CAD for three-days. For more information on Northern Escape Heli-Skiing’s rates and Heli-Rewards program, visit www.neheliski.com/specials.
