As more and more people take up photography as a hobby and with the proliferation of digital cameras and sophisticated editing software it is becoming increasingly difficult to take a "unique" image - something that you can post with confidence to your Facebook wall and sit back and watch the "likes" roll in.
This is especially true in wildlife photography where once an image of a lion on a kill would induce gasps of admiration, viewers these days expect almost unbelievable compositions of honey badgers attacking giraffes just to raise an eyebrow.
Pangolin Photo Safaris was born out of the demand from our clients to get them in positions where they will have a better than average chance of getting a great shot and although there are never any guarantees that the subjects will cooperate, with the right drivers, vehicles/boats and onboard expertise at least the odds start to fall in your favour.
Its for this precise reason that we have recently completed construction of our latest Ad-Vantage point which is already affording our clients some fantastic photo opportunities from a very unique point of view.
The Elephant Bunker is situated in The Lesoma Valley just outside the Chobe National Park in Northern Botswana. The Chobe is famous for its huge elephant populations but asides from having plenty of water available in the river there are a few favorite waterholes where large herds gather and its at one of these that we constructed our new underground hide.
The entrance to The Elephant Bunker is safely situated beneath the bar of the Senyati Rest Camp which overlooks the waterhole. The reinforced concrete tunnel takes you the 18 metres to the hide which is only a few feet away from the edge of the waterhole. Inside the hide there are eight positions for photographer each with a window that at its lowest point is exactly at ground level. The hide is well ventilated, sealed when not in use and is encased in up to 18 inches or reinforced concrete.
As with all wildlife photography there can be moments when all nature seems to evaporate and there is a lull in the action. Fortunately for us the closest loo and an ice cold drink is just beyond the entrance to the tunnel on the Senyati bar/viewing deck!
The Bunker is free to use for all clients of Pangolin Photo Safaris and is incorporated in to the regular workshops and courses that we run through out the year.
The Bunker is the next step in our mission to be the premier photo safari operator in Africa.
