With the host country for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be announced on July 2nd Smiggin Holes is quietly anticipating good news and the excitement is brewing as organisers pull out all stops to ensure the ski resort has the best chance of succeeding.
Since Roy and HG Nelson publicly announced Smiggin Holes as a 2010 candidate not much has been heard, but when NSW Premier, Bob Carr, made an appearance in the Snowy Mountains on Monday June 2nd , it was rumoured by locals that Mr. Carr may have been in town to survey the prospective Olympic site.
If this is true, Smiggin Holes will be challenging Vancouver, Canada Pyeonchang, Korea and Salzburg, Austria to win the bid however, it has been heard that Salzburg is currently in the number two position and IOC President Jacques Rogge is leaning towards Smiggin Holes as number one.
The Perisher Blue Master Plan has already accommodated the needs of the Olympics by including a new ice skating rink, ideal for the ever popular ice hockey and figure skating events. Also local businesses are lining up to become official sponsors. It has been reported that Clancys Cleanliness will become the official cleaning company and new lodges will be constructed in Jindabyne that could be used for the athletes village.
Due to the popularity of Perisher Blues legendary Wild Winter Weekend, Smiggin Holes is also pushing for rubber tube racing and a dash for medals (based on the Dash for Cash) competition to be included in 2010, in addition to the popular luge and skeleton competitions. These new events may be what ultimately pushes Smiggin Holes over the finish line and win the bid!
As part of the Mountain Master Plan a tube course on Smiggin's slopes and a number of new runs are currently in the process of being marked out, everything is on track for a 2010 completion, Neil Thew, Perisher Blues Public Relations Manager said.
With tens of thousands of volunteers already lending their support on the Roy and HG website THE ICE DREAM, its time for the rest of the nation to help make the dream come true for Smiggin Holes 2010!
